Applied Mathematics

Develop skills in mathematics to help make your community a better place

Mathematics is evident in the arrangement and order of God’s creation. Applied mathematics at Geneva allows students to study the mathematical laws that govern the universe and to take competency with numbers to the next level, development of practical applications that protect and improve life.

Geneva prepares you to make a meaningful impact in your career, community and life.

Specialized Focus

Apply your math skills in an applied field like computer science, physics, or engineering

Internship Opportunities

Work at one of the many STEM companies in and around Pittsburgh

Technology Center

Collaborate with fellow students through Geneva’s Pinkerton Center for Technology Development

Key Courses

Introduction to Abstract Algebra

Work with complex algebraic structures and learn to solve problems when there is no definitive data.

Numerical Methods

Study various types of equations and problems and learn how to solve them using different strategies.

Introduction to Real Analysis

Study sequences, limits, continuities, and numerical properties within mathematics.

Optics

Learn about sight and the behavior of light through electromagnetic waves and their features.

Experienced & Accomplished Faculty

The mission of the Mathematics programs is to train our students in the knowledge and skills commonly used in the field of mathematics and its applications. We believe that God has spoken his Creation in the language of mathematics: that is, mathematics is consistently embedded in all of Creation. Thus, to study God's Creation, one needs a strong understanding of mathematics. The student is expected to obtain a working knowledge of skills needed to understand the Creation.
The learning objectives for applied mathematics majors are:
  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to use quantitative thinking and to analyze and solve a variety of problems that require advanced mathematical understanding including an understanding of mathematical proofs.
  2. Students will demonstrate an ability to identify, formulate, abstract, and solve math problems and situations that use tools from a variety of mathematical areas, including algebra, calculus, probability, numerical analysis, and differential equations.
  3. Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate mathematical ideas clearly. They will use correct mathematical terminology and proper mathematical notation with a logical progression of steps in mathematical operations.
  4. Students will demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the value of mathematical understanding to contribute to a Christian worldview and a life of faithfulness.
  5. Students will demonstrate competence in computer technology, software, and algorithmic tools necessary for quantitative analysis and mathematical modeling, and in the application of mathematics to secondary fields of study.
