Participating students will attend class during the 2013 spring semester to learn about business and culture in South America with an emphasis on Argentina and Brazil. The class qualifies as either BUS 318 or HUM 304 and meets once a week on Tuesdays from 12:30 - 1:50 p.m. Students will learn about South American history, language and culture, including the arts, religion and political history.

During the May@Geneva term, students will take a two-week trip to Argentina and Brazil from May 12-24 guided by Global Tracks. The trip begins with five days in Argentina′s capital, Buenos Aires, a thriving seaport and center of commerce. While there, students will visit the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange; study and tour historical sites such as the Santa Susana Gaucho Ranch, the San Telmo and Recoleta neighborhoods, including a trip to the graveside of First Lady Eva Perone of Evita fame; and tour the U.S. Commercial Services. Among visiting other sites, students will also spend time discussing modern Argentinean culture with professors and students at a local university. Next, students will spend two-and-a-half days in Iguassu, Argentina, where they will explore the port of Iguassu and the famous Itaipu Hydroelectric power plant, as well as hike along the breathtaking natural wonder of 275 individual waterfalls along the Iguassu River. The experience concludes with five days in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Participants will visit local businesses and churches, tour Sugar Loaf Mountain and head to Corcovado to visit Christ the Redeemer on top of the mountain overlooking the city.

The integration of classroom learning with real-world experience is what makes this opportunity so unique. Associate Professor of Business, Dr. Denise Murphy-Gerber, who will teach the course and accompany the students to South American as the Geneva trip manager, says "Everything that we talk about in class, students will see, feel and experience on the trip. In class, we will discuss Argentinean history and culture. While on the ground, we will visit a traditional Mapuche ranch, enjoy traditional BBQ dishes and experience South American Tango. We will study culture and its impact on business then visit local businesses and manufacturing facilities."

Students will receive one credit for the Argentina & Brazil Experience class and three credits for the trip to South America. Students may participate in the class without traveling for one credit, but completion of the class is a prerequisite for attending the trip.
