The Biochemistry major prepares students to study living organisms at the molecular level. Often referred to as the chemistry of life, biochemistry asks how the remarkable properties of organisms relate to their molecules. Biochemists study the relationship between structure and function of biomolecules, chemical reactions of organisms (metabolism) and communication within and among organisms.
As a result of these studies, biochemists have developed a better understanding life at the molecular level, and thereby have developed better medicines and helped cure diseases. At Geneva College, the biochemistry major includes classes in both chemistry and biology to develop a broad understanding of life at the molecular level. Biochemistry students are well prepared for basic and applied research, medical and allied health schools, and related fields such as pharmacology.
