The English Department bases its curriculum, teaching pedagogies, and scholarship on the belief that human beings, created in the image of God, are inherently creative beings themselves.

Students will grow steadily in their ability to honor God as they prepare to become competent writers and innovative critical thinkers through the study of:

  • literature
  • analytical and creative writing
  • the related arts

Students who graduate from Geneva College with a major in Writing will accomplish the following outcomes:

  1. Students will write prose and/or poetry that uses clear, cogent, incisive, and engaging figurative language to honor God.
  2. Students will know, understand, and utilize an adaptable writing process of re-writing and re-vision to attain professional standards within the field of publication.
  3. Students will discover the immense creative capacity of all human languages by studying language structures within both oral and written traditions.
  4. Students will know and understand the processes, theories, and application of rhetoric to thoughtful writing and to the interpretation of literature.
  5. Students will understand the intersection of Christianity with language structures, writing, and literature; and be able to make connections and distinctions between their personal worldview and the worldviews expressed in literary texts.
