Online Bridge Courses Bridge courses which are offered "online" are technically "hybrid" courses because at least two of your class sessions will be face to face. Typically the first and last sessions of the Bridge courses designated OL will be held in a classroom setting at the time and place designated on the schedule. (An exception is EGL 101 OL for which the first two sessions are online.) These face-to-face sessions are mandatory. The first session establishes technological details, without which your access to the course cannot be insured.

What to expect from an online course You will be using Web-based software called Blackboard for your Geneva online course; this software integrates course materials with communication tools. For this course you will need the following products and competencies:

  • A Web-browser - Netscape Navigator (4.7 or higher) or Internet Explorer (5.0 or higher).
  • An e-mail account and the knowledge of how to send and receive e-mail.
  • The ability to navigate the Web (use a browser) and handle multiple open windows.
  • The ability to open, close and save files and attachments.

Frequently asked questions about Geneva 's online courses What is Blackboard? Blackboard software allows instructors to make course study material available for students via the Web. Geneva 's first online courses are constructed using only the most basic features of the software. Blackboard also allows students and instructors to communicate using Discussion Forums, Announcements, and E-Mail. At this time, Geneva 's online courses are constructed using only asynchronous communication tools.

How do I access Blackboard? Click on your Web browser ( e.g . Netscape or Internet Explorer) and type the following Web address in the address bar:

How do I log into Blackboard for the first time? All access to Blackboard is controlled, via a login page. You need a Username and Password to log into Blackboard. Usernames and temporary passwords will be distributed at the first face-to-face meeting of your Geneva online course. Your Username is the first initial of your first name, followed by the first seven letters of your last name, all lowercase letters. You will receive instructions for changing to a personal Password at the face-to-face meeting of the course.

How do I get out of Blackboard? When you wish to finish using Blackboard, please log off by clicking on the Log Out button at the top of the screen.

How do I send e-mail in Blackboard? You can send e-mail to other Blackboard users (course instructors and/or other participants) from inside Blackboard. Click on Communication < Send E-mail< Select recipients. You cannot receive e-mail in Blackboard; e-mail sent to you from course participants and instructors is received through your regular e-mail account. Blackboard does not give you a new e-mail address; it uses your existing e-mail address. You must provide Geneva 's System Administrator with your valid e-mail address. This must not change over the duration of the course or you will not receive course-related e-mail.

I have forgotten my Blackboard Password, what do I do? If you have problems with your Password, call the System Administrator at the ADCP office (800-576-3111).

I cannot connect to the Blackboard login page, what do I do? If you have difficulties connecting to the Web site, follow these steps:

  1. Try again after 15 minutes and after one hour, if necessary. Web sites can have access delays.
  2. If you still have problems, contact the System Administrator at the DCP office (800-576-3111).

When requesting technical assistance, be prepared to provide the System Administrator with the following information: Your full name and your username Your e-mail address and your telephone number Your instructor's name The nature of your difficulty with the system and any error messages encountered
