Spring is in the air, but winter isn't done just yet. While the baseball and softball teams opened their respective seasons this past week, the men's basketball team got the news that it still had some season left to play.

Geneva's men's basketball team accepted an at-large bid to the NCCAA national tournament, which begins on March 18. Finishing the regular season with a victory over Westminster to post a 13-12 overall record, the Golden Tornadoes officially became eligible for post-season play. Geneva will participate in the eight-team, double elimination tournament from March 18-20. The brackets will be released later this week as Geneva will find out its first round opponent.

While the snow continued to fall this past week, the sun was shining in Florida and the baseball and softball teams took full advantage of the opportunity. The baseball team opened the week with three straight losses, but rallied for three victories to even its record at 3-3 at week's end. The Golden Tornadoes complete their Florida trip with a doubleheader on Monday. Derek Sumner and Dave Foss each turned in a pair of pitching gems for the Golden Tornadoes. Sumner tossed a complete game shut-out, including 11 strikeouts in a 2-0 victory over Eastern. On Saturday, Foss went eight scoreless innings, while striking out nine to defeat Northwestern. Justin Montgomery picked up a pair of saves on the week. The offense was led by Tadd Eyster's .500 batting average and two home runs. Andy Hiskey's RBI single in the sixth inning against Northwestern proved to be the game winner.

Geneva's softball team enjoyed a similar turnaround in sunny Kissimmee, FL. After dropping five of the first six, the Golden Tornadoes finished the week by winning three of four and returning home with a record of 4-6. Geneva lost a pair of extra inning games, including a 1-0 loss to Wartburg College, the number two ranked team in the country. Ashley Archer and Rebekah Wahl each picked up a pair of pitching victories, while Michawn Rich made a very smooth transition from the basketball court to the softball diamond. Rich led Geneva with a .600 batting average (18-40), including six doubles and a team best seven runs scored. Adriane Blake hit her first collegiate home run and Amy Pearce chipped in with a pair of long balls during the week.

Geneva's track and field team had a successful week of training during its annual trek to Gulf Shores, Alabama. The track team opens its outdoor season with a meet on March 22.
