The spring athletic season is up and running as of last week. Both the softball and baseball teams opened their respective seasons in the sunshine state last week. The baseball team is off to a tremendous start with eight victories in their first ten games. Last week, the Golden Tornadoes were a perfect 6-0 at Ft. Pierce, FL. Geneva swept doubleheaders from Martin Luther College, Northwestern and Bethany. The Golden Tornadoes used a balanced offensive attack and solid pitching to get off to a great start. Senior Derek Sumner won both of his outings last week with a combined 23 strikeouts in wins over Martin Luther and Bethany. Sumner also chipped in with his bat by belting a go-ahead grand slam in a 6-5 victory over Bethany on Saturday.

The Geneva softball team has started the new season a bit more inconsistent. The Golden Tornadoes finished their Florida swing with an overall record of 4-6, including losses to three top 25 NCAA Division III teams. Geneva opened with four consecutive doubleheader splits in the first four days of the trip before dropping games to Ramapo and Hope on Saturday by identical 2-1 scores. Senior Ashley Archer won three of the four games in the circle while freshman Ariel Lilly picked up her first collegiate victory for win number four. Kara Zimmerman provided the offensive fireworks with a two-run go-ahead homer to spark Geneva to a 7-3 victory over Hiram on Friday.
