It was a record breaking week for the Geneva baseball and softball teams led by seniors Derek Sumner and Amy Pearce. Both set significant records this week while helping their respective teams to victories against quality PAC opponents. Meanwhile, the track team competed well once again at the Robert Morris University Invitational.
Derek Sumner became Geneva's all-time strikeout leader with a ten strikeout performance in a victory over Grove City. Sumner has reached 221 strikeouts in his career to take over the top spot that has been held by Doug Bleggi since 1985. Sumner moved to 6-2 on the season with his complete game victory over Grove City by the score of 13-3. That win salvaged a doubleheader split against the Wolverines. Jon Jurinko collected five hits in the doubleheader including a two-run homer to help the Golden Tornadoes in game two. Geneva ended the week with an overall record of 16-8.
The women's softball team enjoyed a 3-1 week and moved to 16-10 on the season after a sweep against Washington & Jefferson on Saturday. On the heels of a split at Westminster on Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes came alive at the plate and banged out 24 hits in the two wins against the Presidents. Ashley Archer won a pair of games for the week and moved to 50 career victories, which is just one shy of tying the school record. Teammate Amy Pearce launched her 24th career home run on Saturday which set a new school record for the Golden Tornadoes. But the offensive day was stolen by Michawn Rich who went 7-8 at the plate and scored four runs. Her day was capped by a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning of game two. Adriane Blake hit a go-ahead three run homer to win game one.
The Geneva men's 4 x 100 meter relay team took the spotlight at the Robert Morris Invitational on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes foursome of Bobby Rex, Matt Susa, Stephen Polite and Cory Fraction took the top prize with a finals time of 44.41. Rex also had success with a pair of top three finishes in the 100 and 200 meter races. The women's results were highlighted by Tiffany Bear, who finished second in the javelin at 38.96 meters and fourth in the shot put at 10.92 meters.
