An emotional final week of the regular season came to an end this past weekend as the spring athletic teams were forced to say good-bye to their respective senior classes. The track and field teams sent 12 student-athletes to the NCCAA championships, the baseball team ended its regular season and the softball team saw its campaign come to an end.

The softball team finished its season in style with a doubleheader sweep over Saint Vincent College on the final day of the season. Head coach Van Zanic won his 200th career game and six seniors helped Geneva finish its season with a 25-15 overall record. Ashley Archer captured the career record for strikeouts in her next to last inning in the circle. Amy Pearce hit her record 27th career home run and she finished the year with the highest single season batting average (.456). Other seniors Stephanie Wagle, Michawn Rich, Kim Slater and Adrienne Hays each played a significant role in the success of the softball program for the past four years.

Geneva's baseball team went 1-3 in a four-game series with Gannon University last week. The Golden Tornaodes finished their regular season with a record of 22-15 and will now play the waiting game for the NCCAA championships beginning on May 20. Senior Derek Sumner broke his own single season strikeout record of 84 in his start on Wednesday. Jon and Joe Jurinko combined for five hits and four RBI's in Geneva's doubleheader split with Gannon on Wednesday. Seniors Derek Sumner, Andy Lubich, Tadd Eyster and Nick Phillips each played their final home games on Saturday at 33rd Street Field.

The week that was belonged to senior Tiffany Bear. The senior suffered a significant back injury that forced her out of the NCCAA heptathlon event. However, after much improvement for three days, she was able to compete in the javelin event and became one of only a handful of national champions. Bear' throw of over 140 feet on Saturday bettered the next closest competitor by nearly eight feet to claim the NCCAA national title. Freshman Bobby Rex advanced to the finals of the 200 meter race and took home a seventh place finish. Teammate Dan Dillman captured a pair of top ten finishes in the discus and the shot put.

Congratulations to seniors Tiffany Bear, Kelsey Anderson, Rebecca VanRegenmorter and Jamie Williams on finishing their athletic careers.

There are no athletic events scheduled for the upcoming week!
