The first full weekend of athletic competition has been completed with tremendous results for the Golden Tornadoes. Men's and women's soccer, cross country and volleyball all started the 2008 season with positive results.

In cross country, both the men and women brought back eighth place finishes at the Westminster College Invitational. The men competed against 11 other schools while the women faced off against a total of 13 schools. Rebecca VanRegenmorter paced the women's team with a seventh place finish in a time of 24:44. Fellow senior Nicole Okerlund finished 26th in 26:17. Rounding out the top five for Geneva were Sarah Davis (67th), Sarah Wilson (81st) and Anna Ford (97th). On the men's side, Josh Gunnett and Josh Falk crossed the line in 10th and 11th place respectively. Gunnett turned in a time of 28:34 with Falk finished just two seconds later. Ryan Thorn (28th), Chuck Walters (73rd) and Matt Reeves (98th) also scored for the Golden Tornadoes.

In women's volleyball, Geneva traveled to Baltimore, MD over the weekend and came away with a split in four matches. The Golden Tornadoes defeated Goucher 3-1 and DeSales 3-0 on Friday night. Geneva had the tables turned against them on Saturday with a pair of losses to Widener and Johns Hopkins. Senior Elizabeth Fisher paced the offense by leading the team in kills in three of the four matches. Fisher was the lone Geneva representative named to the All-Tournament team.

Geneva's men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Wilmington in the season opener on Friday night. The only goal for Geneva was netted by sophomore Bruce Fox. Geneva took a 1-0 lead into the half, but could not hold off a Wilmington charge in the final 45 minutes. The Golden Tornadoes turned things around on Saturday night in front of close to 900 people at the Cedarville home opener. Geneva escaped with a 1-0 lead thanks to the first victory and shut-out from David Callahan in goal and the first collegiate tally from Joshua Mann. Head coach Todd Beall returned to his alma mater and came away with a victory.

Perhaps the biggest story of the weekend was the play of the women's soccer team. Coming off a 2-15-1 season in 2007, the Golden Tornadoes and head coach Linda Sumner managed to match their entire win total from a year ago in less than 24 hours. Geneva defeated LaRoche 2-0 on Friday and then beat Carlow 3-0 on Saturday. Playing at the LaRoche College tournament, Geneva got a goal in each game from Amanda Munsh and much help from her supporting cast. Other goal scorers on the weekend included Amanda Caler, Kelsey Anderson and Kathryn Wiater. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Londino went the distance in both matches to earn her first two victories and first two shut-outs of the season.

Geneva's football team and tennis team begin their 2008 season this Saturday.
