Homecoming is always an exciting time on Genevaâ??s campus. It becomes even more memorable when you send a rival home on the wrong side of the scoreboard not once but three times on the same day. Homecoming 2009 will be remembered for great weather, great food and the year Geneva got the best of Grove City in football, soccer and volleyball. The winning theme continued this past week as the Golden Tornadoes went 8-2 against its opponents in ten athletic events.

The only athletic team that didn't play Grove City on Saturday was the womenâ??s tennis team. These days it doesn't seem to matter who they play as the Golden Tornadoes have moved to 9-4 and have won seven straight matches. Geneva won a hard fought 5-4 decision over Waynesburg on Saturday in the final home match of the season. The duo of Kara Zimmerman and Chelsea Cover continued to shine as the top doubles team won for the eighth straight time before each picking up key singles victories. Cover was forced to three sets but prevailed as the difference in Genevaâ??s win over Waynesburg. Other victories were earned by the doubles team of Ashlyn Mallison and Amy Weller, along with a singles win from senior Bethany Ragonesi. Geneva opened the week with a decisive 8-1 win over W & J and will close out its regular season on Wednesday at Westminster.

Grove City did manage one feather in its cap on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over the womenâ??s soccer team. Playing on the turf of Reeves Field for the first time ever, the Golden Tornadoes were unable to generate much offense. An early first half goal by the Wolverines stood up in a 1-0 loss. Lauren Londino did manage to make eight saves to keep Geneva close. Londino did register her fourth shut-out of the season last Wednesday when the Golden Tornadoes picked up a 2-0 win over Bethany. Rebecca Shaw scored 37 seconds into the match and Elise Mann tallied her team leading seventh goal of the season in the victory. The Golden Tornadoes open a new week with a 7-4 overall record as they prepare to host W & J and Westminster this week.

The menâ??s soccer team outscored Bethany and Grove City 9-0 in a pair of PAC victories this week. On Wednesday, Geneva cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Bison as Josh Mann scored a pair of goals and David Callahan and Evan Biedenbach combined for the shut-out. The Golden Tornadoes were up against a lengthy losing streak to Grove City heading into Saturdayâ??s match, but that was all forgotten at the end of the day as Geneva defeated the Wolverines for the first time in 12 years by the score of 3-0. Callahan registered his fifth shut-out of the season and Geneva got goals from Austin Petrie, Jake McCracken and Ben Makin to improve its record to 8-4 on the season.

The week ended much better than it began for the womenâ??s volleyball team. After falling to Thomas More for the second time this season, Geneva rebounded with wins over Chatham, Grove City and Roberts Wesleyan. The Golden Tornadoes needed five games to dispatch of Chatham on Thursday as Paige Banyas collected a career high 29 digs in the victory and Kristland McCracken led the offense with ten kills. On Saturday, Geneva traveled to Grove City and cruised past the Wolverines in three straight games before coming back for a 3-2 win against Roberts Wesleyan. After dropping games one and two, Geneva stormed back for a five-game victory behind Adriane Blakeâ??s 16 kills and Brandi Snavelyâ??s 55 assists. It was the first of three NCCAA tests for Geneva that will determine its national tournament hopes in November. Geneva ended its week with an overall record of 14-5 and will finally return home on Thursday against Bethany.

The homecoming festivities were made complete on Saturday evening as Genevaâ??s football team rallied from a 14-0 second quarter deficit to score 34 of the gameâ??s final 37 points in a 34-17 victory over Grove City in front of a capacity crowd of over 6600. Geneva racked up 270 yards on the ground and scored five rushing touchdowns in the victory. Gerard Muschette rushed for three second half touchdowns and a career best 219 yards to lead the way. Geneva also got first half scores from Matt Dean and Matt Barge. A blocked field goal by Rashad Briscoe and subsequent return by Adam Rose put the game away early in the fourth quarter. The blocked field goal and a Marcus Costanza fumble recovery led to 14 points as the defense again won the turnover battle. Genevaâ??s football team sits at 4-1 as it sets its sights on the second half of the season which begins at Waynesburg next Saturday.
