The wait is finally over for the Geneva soccer programs as the schedule for the NCCAA East regional tournaments have been set for the upcoming weekend after sitting around for two weeks waiting to find out when and where they would play. The football team also knows where it will be playing on Saturday although it is not exactly where they were hoping they would be for the 2009 NCCAA Victory Bowl. Finally, the cross country season came to a close over the weekend with solid performances from both the men and women at the NCCAA national meet. Winter must be around the corner as well since the college basketball season tips off this week for both the men and women of Geneva and head coaches Renee Drake and Jeff Santarsiero.

The rivalry between Geneva and Westminster just got a bit more intense. Some think the rivalry had simmered down since Westminster left the NAIA several years ago, but after Saturdayâ??s thriller in New Wilmington, the fire has been rekindled. Geneva dropped a 31-28 decision to the Titans when a game winning touchdown was scored in the final seconds. The touchdown capped a final drive that was marred by five Geneva penalties and three pass interference calls that aided the Titanâ??s cause. Gerard Muschette put together another 100+ yard rushing performance and became only the seventh Geneva player to rush for at least 1000 yards in a single season. Freshman Sam Thurston continued to shine with seven catches for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On defense, Aaron Tommelleo came up with his second interception of the season while Matt Curry and Solomon Hejirika each picked up nine tackles to lead the way.

As a result of the loss, the Golden Tornadoes will hit the road this weekend to Greenville, IL to take on Greenville College in the 2009 NCCAA Victory Bowl. Geneva will be playing in its record sixth Victory Bowl while 7-2 Greenville will be making its first appearance. The Golden Tornadoes are 4-1 in their previous five appearances with the only loss coming two years ago against Malone College.

Genevaâ??s cross country teams closed out the 2009 season in style at the NCCAA national meet at Cedarville University. The menâ??s team finished 11th out of 23 and the women were ninth out of 19 competing schools. In menâ??s action, Geneva posted 366 total points with five runners finishing in the top 100 out of 162 racers. Nick Edinger led the Golden Tornadoes with a 47th place finish and a time of 28:23 on the 8K course. Ryan Thorn finished 62nd overall in a time of 28:55. Other top finishers on the menâ??s side included Dan Edgar (75), Josh Gunnett (88) and Nate Mansor (94). The Geneva women posted 311 total points with freshman Shannon Rech leading the charge with a 35th place finish in a personal best time of 19:57. Olivia Biddle finished 55th with her personal best time of 20:49. Other top finishers included Julia Urbanski (67), Samantha Miller (72) and Emily Hoobler (82).

The wait is over for Genevaâ??s soccer teams as each will compete in the NCCAA east regional tournament this weekend. The women will be heading to Rochester, NY for a meeting with Roberts Wesleyan in the East Regional championship on Saturday. The winner will get an automatic bid to the NCCAA nationals. The menâ??s team will be hosting a four-team tournament on Friday and Saturday including Roberts Wesleyan, Nyack and Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Geneva will open against Roberts Wesleyan on Friday afternoon. The women ended their regular season at 9-8 while the men will put its 15-4 overall record on the line.

Basketball season is here and the men and women open their 2009-10 season this week. First year interim head coach Renee Drake makes her debut tonight while Jeff Santarsiero begins his 15th year this weekend for the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament.
