It was an exciting weekend of basketball at Metheny Fieldhouse for the Golden Tornadoes as both the menâ??s and womenâ??s teams came away victoriously against Thiel College on Saturday. The women rallied from 11 points down to win and the men hung on for a one-point victory over the Tomcats.
The Geneva menâ??s team is riding a four game winning streak. It is the first such streak in three years as the Golden Tornadoes have moved to 5- 3 after starting the season with just one win in the first four games. Geneva opened the week with a victory over Penn State Beaver before beginning PAC play with a win at Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday night. Rich Colick scored 23 against Penn State Beaver and followed that up with a 21 point performance against W & J. For the season, Colick leads Geneva with his 18.1 points per game average. Colick scored only nine points on Saturday but got a lift from teammate Lambros Svingos with a team best 16 points in the victory. Bryan Hill also found his long distance shooting touch with four three-point field goals and 12 points. The Golden Tornadoes watched an 11-point lead nearly evaporate but a last second shot by the Tomcats bounced off the rim and Geneva survived the scare. The menâ??s team has a light week of action with only a trip to Bethany on Saturday scheduled for the week.
Genevaâ??s women faced the daunting task of going up against 19th ranked Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday night. After a nightmarish start to the game, the Golden Tornadoes found themselves down 21 points at halftime. Geneva played a solid second half and outscored the Presidentâ??s only to lose by 17 points. Geneva used its second half momentum in a solid effort on Saturday as the Golden Tornadoes defeated Thiel 61-54. Val Hamilton scored 20 points in the loss to W & J and followed that with a ten point, 14 rebound performance on Saturday. Renee Rawding scored a team best 16 points and is just seven points shy of becoming the 12th female player in school history to reach the 1000 point plateau. Geneva will host Penn State Greater Allegheny on Wednesday before traveling to Bethany on Saturday.
