The first rivalry week of the season ended in impressive fashion as the Geneva menâ??s basketball team dominated Westminster to the tune of 75-57 on Saturday afternoon. The victory pushed Genevaâ??s win streak to four games matching its season high. Meanwhile, the womenâ??s team has dropped a season high five straight and have fallen to 5-10 on the season after falling to both Grove City and Westminster.
The womenâ??s basketball week opened with its second consecutive overtime loss. After dropping a tough overtime decision to Chatham two weekends ago, the Golden Tornadoes fell to Grove City in an extra session. Rallying for the final ten points of regulation, Geneva forced overtime before falling short. Christine Carugati drained a pair of three point field goals in the comeback while Renee Rawding led the way with 12 points. On Saturday, Carugati scored a game high 15 points including three treys but it was not enough in a 76-61 loss. The Golden Tornadoes remain winless on the road at 0-8 while they hold a solid 4-2 mark at home. Geneva will host Waynesburg and W & J at Metheny Fieldhouse this week as it looks to get back on track.
Genevaâ??s men surpassed their entire win total from a year ago with their ninth victory of the season on Saturday. After winning only eight games last year, the Golden Tornadoes are enjoying their second four-game winning streak of the season sandwiched around a four-game losing streak. It has been five years since Geneva won five straight which is what it will attempt to do on Wednesday against Waynesburg. Rich Colick continues to pace the offensive attack with a team high 13 points against Grove City and 18 points in the win at Westminster. Dave Phillips and Bryan Hill combined for seven three-point field goals in the win at Westminster. Geneva ended a five-game losing streak against Grove City and a two-game slide against the Titans.
Genevaâ??s indoor track and field season kicks off this weekend as the Golden Tornadoes will visit Robert Morris on Friday evening. Interim head coach Brian Yowler will take the menâ??s and womenâ??s team into competition against some very hefty competition.
