The Geneva College track and field team continues to show significant improvements on many fronts as the season hits the halfway point. Meanwhile, a light week for the softball team resulted in a Saturday split with a very good Bethany team. The baseball team struggled through a difficult and winless week but will look to turn things around with another PAC-filled week of games on the horizon.

First year track and field coach Brian Yowler continues to preach about constant improvement to his young team. On Saturday, the maturation process continued with some very impressive individual performances. In womenâ??s action, Aisha Moore turned in three top ten finishes while teammate Liz Michalak had a pair of top ten efforts and three season best performances along the way. Genevaâ??s top female finisher was Shannon Rech with a second place overall effort in the 5K race despite unseasonably warm temperatures. The menâ??s team had an equally exciting day with two more student-athletes qualifying for the NCCAA national meet. Monas Cunningham finished third and fourth respectively in the 110 and 400 meter hurdles. He qualified for nationals in both events. Teammate Corey Fraction put his name on the national qualifying list with his 11.36 second effort in the 100 meter dash. The Golden Tornadoes will dip into the Division I pool at the end of the week when they visit Robert Morris.

Genevaâ??s softball had just one doubleheader last week and it was one up and one down for the Golden Tornadoes on Saturday at Bethany. Despite a solid pitching effort from Julie DiLonardo in game one, a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning was the difference in a 2-0 loss. Geneva rallied back in the night cap to win a 7-6 thriller in nine innings. DiLonardo came on in relief to pick up her eighth win thanks to Lexi Svingosâ?? walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth. Svingos and Adriane Blake each had three hits in the victory. Geneva ended the week with an overall record of 9-11 with a busy home week ahead.

The baseball team suffered through an 0-5 week and watched its losing streak reach eight games as its overall record fell to 8-12. Not much went right for the Golden Tornadoes in a doubleheader loss to Washington & Jefferson and the always unpleasant trip to Thomas More with three losses over the weekend. The Golden Tornadoes will look to right the ship this week when they have a chance for revenge against W & J at 33rd Street Field on Wednesday.
