With the Geneva College football team enjoying a 2-0 start and its only bye week of the season, the menâ??s and womenâ??s soccer teams took center stage and they certainly didnâ??t disappoint. Both teams enjoyed a perfect 2-0 record this past week which included impressive victories against NAIA competition. Meanwhile, the womenâ??s volleyball team continued its early season success with victories in two of three matches while the womenâ??s tennis team split its only two matches of the week.

The menâ??s soccer team opened its week with a 2-0 victory at LaRoche on Wednesday. Sophomore Josh Mann scored both goals and David Callahan registered his second shut-out of the season. On Saturday night, Callahan was asked to make six saves and he did just that in picking up his third shut-out of the season in a 2-0 win over Cedarville University. Marcus Noel unlocked a scoreless tie in the 62nd minute with his first collegiate goal. Bruce Fox gave the Golden Tornadoes some insurance with his fourth goal of the season as Geneva moved to 4-2 on the season. The menâ??s team embarks on a four-game road trip and will not return to Merriman Athletic Complex until October 7.

In womenâ??s soccer action, Geneva came out on the winning end of a see-saw affair against Franciscan last Wednesday. Maura Allenâ??s game winner in the final minutes secured a 3-2 victory for the Golden Tornadoes. Robin Webster and Elise Mann also scored in the win against Franciscan. Mann scored two more goals in a 3-0 win at Point Park on Saturday. Rebecca Shaw notched her first of the year and Lauren Londino secured her second shut-out of the season. Genevaâ??s women moved to 4-2 on the season and will host a pair of matches this coming week.

Genevaâ??s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to PAC power house Grove City last Monday but quickly rebounded with a lopsided victory of its own. On Friday, the Golden Tornadoes traveled to Erie and came home with an 8-1 victory over Pitt-Bradford. Pulling off two victories each were Maura McLaughlin, Chelsea Cover, Bethany Ragonesi and Amy Weller. The Golden Tornadoes have just one match coming up this week when they host Thomas More on Friday.

It was high drama at Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon as the Geneva womenâ??s volleyball team managed to salvage a split of its two matches against Thomas More and Washington & Jefferson. After dropping the first match of the day to Thomas More, the Golden Tornadoes were able to hold off W & J for a 3-2 victory in the night cap. Geneva fended off a pair of match points in the final game and held on for a 20-18 win in the fifth and deciding game. Brandi Snavely combined for 99 assists in the two matches and Rachel Kuegler threw down 20 kills in the win against W & J. The week started with a 3-1 win at Thiel as Geneva has now won six out of its last seven matches including a 3-1 mark against PAC competition. Overall, the Golden Tornadoes ended the week with a 6-2 record.

Both football and cross country did not compete this weekend but will be rested up for the first weekend of autumn.
