It generally takes a head coach about a month or so to find out exactly how good his or her team may be for that particular season. With four weeks of athletic competition in the rear view mirror, it has become quite apparent that Geneva College has some very good teams this fall. There were a total of ten athletic events scheduled last week and the Golden Tornadoes finished their work on Saturday with an overall record of 9-1 in those events.

The cross country team fared quite well at the Saint Vincent Invitational over the weekend against some of the top competition in the PAC. The womenâ??s team tied for fourth overall and the menâ??s team finished sixth in the team rankings. Freshman Shannon Rech led the womenâ??s charge with a tenth place overall finish in a career best time of 20:19. The Golden Tornadoes featured a total of five women that finished in the top 50 including Samantha Miller, Julia Urbanski, Emily Hoobler and Sarah Davis. On the menâ??s side, Nick Edinger finished 26th overall and teammate Ryan Thorn finished in 30th position. The cross country team will head to Pitt-Greensburg for another test next weekend.

It was a perfect week on the court for the womenâ??s tennis team although it only had one scheduled match. The Golden Tornadoes cruised past Thomas More 7-2 on Friday with four players coming away with victories in both singles and doubles. Led by senior Bethany Ragonesi, other two win days were turned in by Kara Zimmerman, Ashlyn Mallison and Maura McLaughlin. The Golden Tornadoes will host Washington & Jefferson before traveling to Bethany for PAC matches this week.

Will the menâ??s or womenâ??s soccer teams ever be scored upon again? That is a legitimate question after each team posted a pair of shut-out victories last week. Each team has won four games in a row and each improved to 6-2 for the season. David Callahan and the Golden Tornadoes have stretched their shut-out streak to four straight games while Lauren Londino and the womenâ??s team have not allowed a goal in three straight. Offensively, the men were lead by Jake McCrackenâ??s three goal week while Zach Buffalini posted a goal and an assist in Genevaâ??s 3-0 victory at Muskingum on Saturday. Meanwhile, Elise Mann continues to pace the womenâ??s team with a pair of goals in a 7-0 win against Mt. Aloysius and a pair of assists in a 2-0 win against Heidelberg. Julie Collins and Rebecca Shaw each scored on head goals to provide the 2-0 margin of victory on Saturday. The menâ??s team will be faced with the toughest of all challenges on Tuesday when it travels to NCAA Division III national champs and top ranked Messiah College. Both the menâ??s and womenâ??s team open conference play at Thomas More on Friday afternoon.

Genevaâ??s volleyball team went 2-1 on the week including a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday against Westminster and Bethany. The Golden Tornadoes opened the week with a 3-1 loss at Frostburg State. On Saturday, freshman Maggie Bowersox stole the show with a total of 23 kills. In the win against Westminster, Bowersox had ten kills in only 12 swings and 0 attack errors. Brandi Snavely continues to shine with an average of 9.90 assists per game last week. Leading the defense was Brianna Mixter and her 4.8 digs per game. The Golden Tornadoes finished the week with an 8-3 overall record and will face CMU, Chatham, Saint Vincent and Waynesburg this week.

In what was hardly a beautiful day for football on Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes once again sent the home crowd away happy. Geneva cruised to a 37-13 victory over Thiel to improve to 3-0 and move its current win streak to seven games dating back to last year. David Girardi threw for a career high 325 yards on 22-33 passing with one touchdown. Gerard Muschette and Matt Dean each rushed for a pair of touchdowns as the Geneva offense continues to click at a pace of 37 points per game. The defense certainly did its part by forcing three more turnovers and has now taken the ball away from its opponents nine times in the first three games. Geneva will get its toughest test of the season on Saturday when it travels to top ten ranked Washington & Jefferson.

With all the victories and success over the past week, the highlight came on Saturday night when Anthony Dâ??Ambrosia walked into the Geneva football locker room. Just back from the hospital, Anthony was on the sidelines for the Golden Tornadoes victory. He has now returned home for ten days before his next round of chemotherapy. We praise God for allowing him to be at the game and for his continued strength as he continues to fight his leukemia.
