In one of the most exciting and memorable soccer matches in recent history, the menâ??s team pulled off a comeback for the ages on Saturday and sent the message to all of their fans that they should never leave a match early. While the womenâ??s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, the volleyball team continued to roll along with another perfect week and a current seven game winning streak. The womenâ??s tennis team won its only match of the week as it nears the end of the season while the football team improved to a perfect 3-0 on the road with a victory in Latrobe.

With less than three minutes remaining in Saturdayâ??s menâ??s soccer match, Geneva found itself trailing Thomas More 2-0. Having not scored a goal in the first 87 minutes of the match, it seemed more than unlikely that the Golden Tornadoes would find any offensive magic in the closing moments. Magic is exactly what they found as Geneva proceeded to tie the game in regulation and pull out a thrilling overtime victory by the score of 3-2. David Harwood got the excitement stirring before Garrett Masters sent the home crowd into a frenzy with the game tying goal with only 1:32 on the clock. Less than three minutes into overtime, Chris Morschl headed home the game winner and Geneva improved to 8-1-1 with its sixth consecutive victory.

The womenâ??s soccer team yielded twice as many goals on Saturday as it had in its previous 11 matches. Allowing just three goals on the season heading into Saturdayâ??s match, Geneva saw its 11 game unbeaten streak snapped with a 6-1 loss to unbeaten Thomas More. Risa Tillman scored the lone goal in the final moments of the match to avoid the shut-out. Earlier in the week, Geneva battled Carlow to a scoreless tie as senior goalkeeper Lauren Londino picked up her seventh shut-out of the season. The Golden Tornadoes ended the week with an overall record of 8-1-3.

The womenâ??s tennis team won its only match of the week with a convincing 7-2 victory over Bethany to improve its overall record to 6-5 on the season with just two matches remaining in the regular season. Geneva must split its last two matches to guarantee its second consecutive winning season. Against Bethany, Kara Zimmerman was Genevaâ??s only player to win in both singles and doubles. Other winners in singles action included Alison Beatty, Havilah Mohler, Amy Weller and Maura McLaughlin.

A first half offensive shoot out turned into a defensive struggle in the second half as the Geneva football team held off a much improved Saint Vincent team by the score of 27-23. Geneva improved to 3-2 overall including a perfect 3-0 record away from Reeves Field. The dynamic duo of David Girardi and Corey Oâ??Patchen hooked up on a pair of touchdowns in the victory which moved the season touchdown total to seven for Oâ??Patchen. Gerard Muschette scored twice for the Golden Tornadoes and again eclipsed the 100 yard mark for the game for the fourth time in five games in 2010. Defensively, Gary Walstrom and Marcus Costanza each finished with double digit tackles as the Golden Tornadoes kept Saint Vincent off the scoreboard in the second half to secure the victory. Geneva welcomes Waynesburg University to Reeves Field for a homecoming match-up on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The cross country team enjoyed a weekend of rest to prepare for the home stretch. The Golden Tornadoes head to Carnegie Mellon this weekend and then to the biggest regular season meet of the year at Oberlin on October 16. The PAC championships will take place on October 30.

It was the same old story for the Geneva volleyball team last week as they completed a perfect 3-0 record to improve to 16-2 for the season. The Golden Tornadoes have won seven straight matches including victories over Thiel, Waynesburg and Thomas More. Geneva held off Thiel 3-2 on Tuesday night after cruising to victories in the first two games. Adriane Blake picked up a career high 29 kills in the victory while Geneva posted three different players with double digit kills. On Saturday, Rachel Kuegler stole the show against Thomas More with 19 kills, 19 digs, three blocks and three service aces. Geneva will get back to work this week with a pair of matches at Chatham on Wednesday.
