It was a week of beginnings and endings within the Geneva College athletics department. The fall athletic season officially came to an end while the winter sports got off on a positive note. The menâ??s and womenâ??s soccer teams each fell to Roberts Wesleyan in the NCCAA East regional semi-finals while the most difficult loss of the week may have come off the field for the womenâ??s volleyball team.

Genevaâ??s womenâ??s soccer team battled valiantly last Wednesday at Roberts Wesleyan but dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to the Raiders. The Golden Tornadoes finished their season with an overall record of 10-8-3 with three players receiving PAC coaches honors for their efforts. Lauren Londino, Nancy Paul and Risa Tillman were all recognized by the PAC coaches for having the equivalent of an All-Conference season.

In menâ??s soccer action, Jake McCrackenâ??s penalty kick goal in the first half against Roberts Wesleyan on Thursday gave the Golden Tornadoes a 1-0 lead. A pair of Roberts Wesleyan goals in the second half proved to be the difference as Geneva was forced to exit the post-season much earlier than hoped. The tough loss dropped Genevaâ??s record to 14-3-2 but did not diminish what was a tremendous season for Geneva and first year head coach Gary Dunda. Kenton Burckhart, Jake McCracken and Matt Weaver each received PAC coaches honors for tremendous seasons on the field.

Yesterday evening the official word came down from the NCCAA offices that Genevaâ??s womenâ??s volleyball team did not receive an at-large bid to the national tournament. Despite an incredible record breaking season that saw Geneva reach more single season victories that any team in volleyball history at 26-5, the Golden Tornadoes did not get the news they were hoping for from the national committee. Completing a season for the ages, the volleyball team was recognized with four coaches honors from the PAC. Adriane Blake, Deanna Briody, Brianna Mixter and Rachel Kuegler each were recognized for tremendous seasons.

With the fall sports ending, the winter sports took center stage over the weekend. The womenâ??s basketball team opened the season with a 16-point loss to Penn State Beaver last Monday but quickly rebounded on the positive side of things. Less than 24 hours later, Geneva thumped Penn State Greater Allegheny by the count of 73-30 with freshman Samantha Fisher posting her first career double-double. On Saturday night, Geneva enacted some revenge against Penn State Beaver with a 64-50 victory over the Lions. Beth DeLuca and Leah Prisuta each scored in double figures to pace Geneva to an early season record of 2-1.

For the first time in 13 years, the Geneva menâ??s basketball team has opened the season at 2-0. Moreover, it had been since 2005 that the Golden Tornadoes had won their own Tip-Off tournament. Geneva cruised past Penn State Greater Allegheny 90-52 in Fridayâ??s semi-final before upending Hiram 90-64 in the championship round. Rich Colick scored 26 points in the championship to earn MVP honors while Bryan Hill was named to the All-Tournament team with his 19 point effort on Saturday. Junior forward Lambros Svingos also was solid with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the championship.
