Genevaâ??s womenâ??s basketball team opened the week on a downer but ended with an impressive victory. Meanwhile, the menâ??s team picked up an impressive victory to open the week but dropped a road game in Latrobe last Thursday night.

In womenâ??s action, the week began with Geneva still stuck in an offensive rut. The Golden Tornadoes averaged only 32.5 points in losses to Thomas More and Saint Vincent to open the week. With their record falling back to .500 at 6-6, Geneva went back to the road on Saturday and found its offense. Taking a 16 point second half lead over Chatham, the Golden Tornadoes held on down the stretch for a 71-70 victory to move their record to 7-6. Beth DeLuca found her shooting touch with four three-point field goals as Geneva shot nearly 47% from the field in earning the victory. Val Hamilton only scored four points in the game, but she earned the final three points and came up with a game saving steal in the final seconds to preserve the victory. Geneva takes its 7-6 overall record into a new week that features home games against rivals Grove City and Westminster.

In one of the most impressive performances in recent memory, the Geneva menâ??s team jumped all over Thomas More last Monday and ran away to a 102-73 victory. By halftime, the Golden Tornadoes held a 47-15 lead with everything going right in the first 20 minutes. By gameâ??s end, David Phillips had scored 23 points including six three-point field goals. Lambros Svingos added 20 points and Brandon Sopko posted a career best 15 assists, which was the fourth highest single game total in school history. What a difference a few days can make as Geneva could not get the offense going on Thursday night in a 73-65 loss at Saint Vincent. Despite the loss, Richard Colick scored 21 points and Phillips added 20 against the Bearcats. Geneva sits at 9-4 on the season as it awaits long time friends Grove City and Westminster this week.
