The Geneva College menâ??s basketball team faced off against it two longest standing rivals this past week and came away with bragging rights against them both. With victories over Grove City and Westminster, the Golden Tornadoes improved to 11-4 on the season which matches its best start to a season since 2000. In womenâ??s action, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a pair of games to Grove City and Westminster and dipped below the .500 mark for only the second time this season at 7-8.
Christine Carugati did all she could to try and keep Geneva in the game against Grove City last week but it wasn't enough in a 75-54 loss to the Wolverines. Carugati scored a season high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss. She was 6-11 from the field including three field goals from beyond the three point arc. On Saturday, Geneva and Westminster hooked up in a defensive struggle that got away in the second half. Geneva led for most of the first half for the second game in a row but watched Westminster outscored them by 12 in the final stanza. Beth DeLuca was Genevaâ??s only double digit scorer with 13 points in the game. Alyse Scarsella added eight points and nine rebounds for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva takes its 7-8 overall record to the road this week with contests at Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson.
Geneva has taken control of its rivalry against Westminster. The Golden Tornadoes have now won 13 of the last 14 meetings with the Titans following a 93-80 win on Saturday afternoon. Rich Colick, who was held to a career low two points in the 71-59 win over Grove City on Wednesday, made up for lost time with a 30 point effort on 12-17 shooting from the field. Colick got help from Lambros Svingos, who scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. To make up for Colickâ??s slow night on Wednesday, the duo of David Phillips and Bryan Hill combined for 37 points and eight three-point field goals. Geneva moved to 7-1 on its home floor this season and will now take its act on the road to Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson this week.
