Two teams going in opposite directions did an about-face on Saturday as the womenâ??s basketball team put an end to their five-game losing streak while the menâ??s basketball team saw their five-game winning streak halted.
After suffering one of the most heartbreaking defeats in recent history last Wednesday, the Geneva womenâ??s basketball team showed tremendous amounts of character in going on the road to defeat Bethany 82-70 on Saturday afternoon. Last Wednesday, Genevaâ??s 11-point second half lead disappeared only to have Christine Carugati knock down a 28-footer with 0.2 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game. In the ensuing celebration, the officials issued a technical foul on Geneva for leaving the bench with time left on the clock. Thiel won the game 68-66 but the Golden Tornadoes found some motivation after the loss. On Saturday, Carugati scored 21 points while teammates Alyse Scarsella and Valerie Hamilton each posted 17 points in Genevaâ??s 12 point victory at Bethany. As a team, Geneva shot 57% from the field in ending its five game losing streak. The Golden Tornadoes finished the week with an 8-11 overall record as they prepare for a pair of games against national powers Thomas More and Saint Vincent.
Genevaâ??s men rolled past PAC leader Thiel last Wednesday to improve its winning streak to a season long five straight. In the 80-77 victory, Richard Colick posted his second 30-point performance of the season including a perfect 10-10 from the foul line. The winning came to a screeching halt on Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes dropped a 75-63 decision to Bethany in West Virginia. One of the positive points to come out of Saturdayâ??s loss was the play of sophomore Matt Lorello. Lorello scored ten points off the bench and was a perfect 3-3 from the field and 4-4 from the foul line. Meanwhile, Bryan Hill continues to lead the PAC in three-point shooting and put up six more treys in two games last week. Geneva is 14-5 on the season and will travel to Thomas More on Wednesday before heading home on Saturday to host Saint Vincent College.
