â??Perhaps the best individual performance I have seen in my six years at Geneva Collegeâ??. That is how track and field head coach Brian Yowler described the day for junior Julia Urbanski at the NCCAA national indoor track and field meet. Urbanski turned in two of Genevaâ??s six top ten finishes on the national stage. In basketball, the menâ??s team suffered a pair of disheartening losses to end the regular season while the women managed to finish a frustrating season on a very high note on Saturday night.

Coming into the week, Genevaâ??s menâ??s basketball team was flying high. It had only Westminster and Waynesburg remaining on the schedule standing in the way of a 19-win regular season. Those two teams had combined for 11 wins on the season. As it turned out, the Golden Tornadoes were shocked by both teams to finish the season with a 17-8 record and looking for answers heading into the NCCAA post-season. On Wednesday night, Geneva saw a 14-point second half lead disappear in a 72-69 loss to the Titans. Rich Colick scored 20 points but it was not enough to hold off a feisty Titans squad. Geneva was outscored by 16 points in the second half. On senior night on Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes were once again unable to hold on to a halftime lead in suffering an 80-70 loss to Waynesburg. Drew Santarsiero scored a team best 16 points in the loss with seniors Brandon Sopko and Bryce Salomone each chipping in with 11 points. The Golden Tornadoes will now move on to the NCCAA east regional semi-finals on Wednesday night as they host Mount Vernon Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. The winner will advance to meet Roberts Wesleyan in the regional championship.

It is been anything but a smooth ride for the Geneva womenâ??s basketball team in the second half of the season. Despite dropping ten of their last 11 games, the Golden Tornadoes came into Saturdayâ??s finale against 17-7 Waynesburg with enthusiasm and desire. That enthusiasm paid off with a 60-58 victory over the Yellow jackets. The evening started with seniors Valerie Hamilton and Christine Carugati being honored for senior night. Both used that emotion to help Geneva get past Waynesburg. Hamilton connected on a key free throw in the final moments while Carugati posted a career best 25 points to lead all scorers. Geneva finished the season with a 9-16 overall record, which was one victory better than a year ago.

Julia Urbanski enjoyed a day to remember on Saturday as she was one of the two Geneva women to compete in a pair of events at the NCCAA national indoor track and field meet. Urbanski turned in school record performances in both the one mile event and the 800 meter event. Finishing sixth overall in both events, Urbanski ran 5:24.20 in the one mile and 2:24.94 in the 800 meter race. Aisha Moore also competed in two events for Geneva with her best showing coming in the triple jump where she finished tenth overall with a distance of 33-4.75. Freshman Kathryn Regalado turned in a personal best performance with a fourth place finish in the shot put on a throw of 38-04.75.

In menâ??s action, Tyler French brought home a fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 46-04. The other top ten finish for Genevaâ??s men came in the 4 x 200 relay with teammates Ryan White, Wes Marquis, Stephen Polite and Corey Fraction finishing ninth overall with a time of 1:36.55.

The outdoor track and field season is set to begin on March 19, while baseball and softball get going two weeks from today on March 7 in Florida. As for menâ??s basketball, the post-season begins on Wednesday night.
