While the spring athletic season is only a week away for the baseball and softball teams at Geneva College, there is still work to be done by the menâ??s basketball team. By virtue of an impressive 98-89 victory over Mt. Vernon Nazarene last week, the Golden Tornadoes have advanced to the NCCAA East Regional finals against Roberts Wesleyan.

Geneva featured an offensive attack with three players scoring at least 20 points in the win over Mt. Vernon. Richard Colick (25 pts), Bryan Hill (22 pts) and Lambros Svingos (20 pts) led the way for Geneva as it moved to 18-8 on the season and into the regional finals. The Golden Tornadoes nearly were handed an automatic bid to the national tournament on Saturday but Roberts Wesleyan came up two points short in its conference semi-final game. The Raiders would have received a bid to the NAIA national tournament had they come out on top against Cedarville. As it is, Geneva will travel to Rochester, NY on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off for the right to advance to its second consecutive NCCAA national tournament.

This time next week, the Geneva baseball and softball teams will be in Florida preparing to open the 2011 season. The baseball team will be playing 11 games, mostly in Clearwater, while the softball team will be stationed in Kissimmee while tackling a 12-game schedule.

Following is the athletic schedule for the upcoming week:

Thurs., March 3 Men's Basketball at Roberts Wesleyan
(NCCAA East Regional Championship) 7:30 p.m.
