The spring semester is quickly coming to a close both in the classroom and on the field but the Geneva spring athletic teams still have much work to do in what looks to be a busy post-season. The baseball team put together a 3-1 record last week with softball checking in with a mark of 5-1. Meanwhile, the track and field team put its athletes up against the best the conference has to offer at the PAC championships.

The track and field team headed to Bethany College on Friday and Saturday for the PAC championships. On Friday, Alayna Merkle became the 20th Geneva athlete to qualify for the NCCAA national tournament. Merkle turned in a season best performance in the 10K event to add her name to the record number of national qualifiers. The usual suspects did their thing on Saturday as Dan Dillman (Shot Put) and Julia Urbanski (1500 meter) each turned in top performances for their respective events. Dillman also placed fourth in the discus. Nick Edinger was fourth in the 5000 meter event while Ryan White also finished fourth in the 400 meter race. In addition to Urbanskiâ??s effort for the women, Kathryn Regalso was second in the shot put and Mary Keen placed third in the discus. Geneva will take its 20 national qualifiers to the NCCAA national stage this coming weekend.

In softball, Geneva posted a 5-1 record last week including a marathon victory at Waynesburg on Saturday. Geneva swept doubleheaders from Penn State Beaver and Thiel to open the week before splitting a pair with Waynesburg on Saturday. Ariel Lilly picked up two victories in the circle including a complete game, shut-out against Thiel. Her pitching counterpart Julie DiLonardo was even more impressive with 26.1 innings of work without allowing an earned run. She was 3-0 on the week and struck out 20 batters. DiLonardo pushed her record to 19-7 overall with a conference leading 107 strikeouts. It took 13 innings for Geneva to defeat Waynesburg in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes exploded for five runs in the top of the 13th to get the victory. Earlier in the week, Martha Adams came up with a walk-off double as Geneva held off Penn State Beaver 4-3. The Golden Tornadoes finished the regular season with an overall record of 25-11 and will await word on what seed it will receive for the NCCAA national tournament beginning on May 12th in Troutville, VA.

Genevaâ??s baseball team won three out of four last week including a dramatic 5-4 win against Grove City in the night cap on Saturday. Mike Suluvaâ??s diving catch with two on and two out saved the game for the Golden Tornadoes. Genevaâ??s four run fifth inning proved to be the difference as Mike Jeffreys picked the first victory of his career. Jeffreys also got things done with the bat last week going 6-12 with 6 RBIâ??s. He picked up a career best five RBIâ??s in Genevaâ??s 16-14 slugfest victory over Bethany earlier in the week. Geneva scored 30 combined runs on back to back days in wins over Bethany and Thiel. Geneva pounded out 15 hits in the win over Thiel including a three-hit, three RBI effort from Adam Scheiderer. The Golden Tornadoes are sitting at 20-15 on the season and will most likely play one more make-up game with Grove City sometime this week to close out the regular season. Geneva will then await the NCCAA East regional tournament with the dates and location still to be determined.

Following is the athletic schedule for the upcoming week:
