Even as the 2011 graduating class was busy receiving their diplomas on Saturday, the menâ??s and womenâ??s track and field team had some unfinished business at the NCCAA national meet. Meanwhile, the baseball and softball post-season roads become clear over the weekend with each heading back into action this coming week.

Only one female student-athlete in the country is awarded the Wheeler Award, which symbolizes characteristics of excellence on and off the track. Established to enhance excellence in Christian track and field competition and to perpetuate the Christian philosophy and faith as exemplified through Christ-like track and field participation in NCCAA member institutions. The 2011 award for women was handed out to Genevaâ??s Julia Urbanski for her tremendous skill on the track and her amazing heart off of it. Urbanski became the first-ever Geneva student-athlete to be so honored. Prior to receiving her amazing honor, she finished her brilliant career with a pair of top ten finishes. She came in fifth place in the 1500 meter event and sixth in the 800 meter race. Joining her on the womenâ??s side was Liz Michalak, who came in seventh overall in the heptathlon and Aisha Moore, who turned in an eighth place spot in the triple jump. In the shot put, Kathryn Regalado and Katherine Mickalak finished fourth and sixth respectively in the flight one finals.

In menâ??s action, Nick Edinger turned in a seventh place finish in the 5000 meter event with other highlights going to Nathan Mansor (4th â?? 3000 meter steeplechase), Shaka Sydnor (8th â?? Triple Jump) and Kyle Beckhusen (8th â?? Decathlon).

The baseball team will continue its season on Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Canton to face Malone in what will result in a best of three series for the right to advance to the NCCAA national tournament. Geneva and Malone will play a doubleheader on Wednesday and will play game three, if necessary, on Thursday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes ended their regular season with an overall record of 20-15 and will be looking for a return trip to the national tournament.

Genevaâ??s softball team has already advanced to the NCCAA national tournament in Troutville, VA. The Golden Tornadoes will be departing on Tuesday and will begin play on Thursday at 4 p.m. The eighth seed in the eight team tournament, the 25-11 and Golden Tornadoes have been matched up with 52-4 and defending NCCAA national champion Central Baptist, AK in round one of the double elimination tournament.
