While some of the Geneva College athletic teams came back to Earth after having some amazing early season success, still other teams continue to fly well above the radar and can seemingly do no wrong in the first few weeks of competition. Womenâ??s tennis has been up and down in the first couple of weeks, while the womenâ??s soccer team has been only up. The volleyball team finally dropped a match but has run off one of the most impressive starts to a season in recent history. The cross country teams continue to improve and impress while the menâ??s soccer team suffered its first loss in the Gary Dunda era. The football teamâ??s performance mirrored the weather on Saturday night. It was good in the first half and not so pretty in the second. All in all, the 2010 fall season has been nothing short of entertaining across the board.

In womenâ??s tennis, Geneva has seen three consecutive 9-0 scores but the bad news is two of those scores have been on the wrong side. This past week, the Golden Tornadoes swept away Franciscan by a 9-0 count before having the trick put on them against Grove City. Christine Bullock, Kara Zimmerman and Chelsea Cover each pulled off the doubleheader victories against Franciscan with wins in singles and doubles in the 9-0 whitewash. With an overall record of 2-2, the Golden Tornadoes hit the road for three matches this week beginning with Westminster on Wednesday afternoon.

In womenâ??s soccer, the Golden Tornadoes remained unbeaten with a 2-0-1 week behind the amazing play of senior goalkeeper Lauren Londino. Londino kept opponents off the board for four and half games to start the season before Medaille managed to get one past her on Saturday evening. The senior turned away 14 shots in Genevaâ??s scoreless tie at Buffalo State while in the process giving Londino her school record tying 21st career shut-out. She also tied the school mark with four consecutive shut-outs before Saturdayâ??s 2-1 win at Medaille. Offensively, Rebecca Shaw put home the only goal in a 1-0 win at Mt. Aloysius on an overtime penalty kick game winner. On Saturday, Elise Mann and Amanda Munsch each scored in Genevaâ??s victory. Geneva enters a new week holding onto a 4-0-1 overall record.

In menâ??s soccer action, it was the tale of two matches for Genevaâ??s menâ??s soccer team this past week. The Golden Tornadoes played perhaps their most solid match of the early season in a 4-1 victory over Point Park on Wednesday night. Jeb Nash, Kenton Burckhart, Teddy Kryswiecki and Jacob Merrill all found the net against the Pioneers as Evan Biedenbach was solid in the net. On Saturday, the Gary Dunda era saw its first loss at the hands of Mt. Union College. The Red Raiders controlled the pace of the game and came away with a 2-0 victory over the Golden Tornadoes. With an overall mark of 2-1-1 in the first four matches, Geneva will face off against former AMC foe Malone on Thursday before returning home against Heidelberg.

The Geneva College volleyball team finally saw its undefeated early season come to an end at the Frostburg State University tournament against the host school in the championship match. After going 3-0 in pool play with victories over Galluadet, Marietta and Susquehanna, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a straight set match to Frostburg State in the championship. Adriane Blake and Brianna Mixter each were selected onto the All-Tournament team. Mixter was forced into Genevaâ??s setting position after freshman Deanna Briody suffered an ankle injury in the first game of the tournament on Friday night. Meanwhile, Blake was again outstanding including a 10 kill performance in the championship match. Geneva has opened the season with an 8-1 record in its first nine matches.

At Waynesburg University in cross country, the Geneva menâ??s team finished third overall behind only first place Carnegie Mellon and second place Grove City. On the womenâ??s side, the Golden Tornadoes finished fifth out of ten schools. Nick Edinger once again ran a solid race with a 14th place individual finish with a time of 27:21. Although it was a bit slower than last week, it was still over a minute faster than his time on the same course a year ago. Teammate Jon Shope continues to improve with a 16th place finish in a time of 27:27 which was also the fastest 8K time for any freshman in school history. Rounding out the top five runners on the menâ??s side were Owen Struck, Ryan Thorn and Jacob Beschner. Six of the eight Geneva women ran a faster time this week than they did a week ago. Anayna Merkle led the way with a 14th place finish in a time of 24:53, less than a half second ahead of teammate Shannon Rech in 15th place. Encouraging each other throughout the race, Merkle and Rech went head to head for almost the entire distance of the course. Their finishing times were 42 seconds ahead of Rechâ??s finishing time a year ago at Waynesburg. Julia Urbanski, Sarah Davis and Samantha Miller each finished in Genevaâ??s top five.

Finally in football, Geneva saw its seven game home winning streak halted abruptly on Saturday night at the hands of Albright College. Despite 135 yards and two more touchdowns from Gerard Muschette, the Golden Tornadoes could not slow down the Lions offensive attack to the tune of 507 total yards of offense. David Girardi threw for 266 yards on 22-34 passing and a pair of touchdowns, but Geneva watched Albright score 37 of the gameâ??s final 44 points after Geneva had taken a 20-17 second quarter lead. A halfback pass for a touchdown followed 12 seconds later by a fumble recovery and touchdown on the ensuing kickoff turned the game into Albrightâ??s favor. Geneva is now 0-3 all-time against Albright having not played the Lions since 1938. Muschette moved into fourth place on Genevaâ??s all-time rushing list with 2551 career yards.
