With the weather in Western Pennsylvania starting to turn colder, the menâ??s soccer team decided it really didn't want to experience the first frost of the season. Instead, the Golden Tornadoes decided to win the NCCAA Eastern regional tournament and take a trip to Kissimmee, FL for the NCCAA national tournament. Geneva defeated Houghton 2-1 in the semi-final round before advancing to the national tournament on penalty kicks following a 0-0 tie at Malone in the championship. Last Wednesday, Geneva watched Houghton tie the score at 1-1 late in the second half to set up heroics from Austin Petrie. An electric goal off of the foot of Petrie sent Geneva into the championship with a 2-1 victory. On Saturday, neither team could find the net in regulation and in overtime so the match went to penalty kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Bryan Butler gave Geneva an early edge by stopping Maloneâ??s first shooter. PK goals from Josh Mann, Jeb Nash and Jon Mathoslah set up the game winning opportunity from senior Jake McCracken. Ironically, it was Genevaâ??s leading scorer that found the net and sent Geneva celebrating all the way to Florida. The Golden Tornadoes will open national tournament play next Wednesday, November 30 at 12 noon against Palm Beach Atlantic.

The menâ??s and womenâ??s basketball season is now in full swing. Both teams started their seasons with road victories at Penn State Greater Allegheny before faltering later in the week. In the season opener for the women, senior Beth DeLuca and Rachel Rouan each scored 16 points to lead the Golden Tornadoes to a 61-44 victory over the Lions. Two days later, Geneva opened up the home schedule with a 64-52 loss to Ursuline College. Freshman Chelsea Kauffman scored a team best 12 points while Rouan chipped in with 11 points. DeLuca and Chelsea Dâ??Urso also finished in double figures with ten each. With a 1-1 overall record after the first week of the season, new head coach Lori Wynn and the Golden Tornadoes will be tested two more times this week.

In menâ??s action, David Phillips scored 15 points and Matt Lorello added ten points in Genevaâ??s 64-44 victory at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Lorello continued his strong play of the weekend with 18 and 19 points respectively despite losses to Pitt-Greensburg and Mt. Union at the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament. Lorello was named to the All-Tournament team although Geneva lost both ends of its Tip-Off Tournament for the first time since 2004. More importantly than the play on the court was the fact that the menâ??s basketball team raised nearly $1000 for Cancer research over the weekend. With a 1-2 record following the first week of action, Geneva goes back to work on Tuesday night at Penn State Beaver. Geneva head coach Jeff Santarsiero sits just one win away from his 250th victory on the Geneva bench.

In other athletic news, congratulations should go out to several fall student-athletes for being selected to All-Conference teams in the Presidentsâ?? Athletic Conference. Kevin Miranda led the list of 11 football players as Genevaâ??s only second team selection. Ten other players received honorable mention recognition. In menâ??s soccer, Jake McCracken and Jeb Nash were first team selections with Caleb Musslemen receiving second team consideration. Jon Mathoslah, Teddy Krzywiecki and Bryan Butler were honorable mention picks. In womenâ??s soccer, Rebecca Shaw and Maura Allen were each honorable mention selections. The conference champion volleyball team was awarded with three first team selections including PAC player of the year Deanna Briody. Joining Briody on the first team were Maggie Bowersox and Rachel Kuegler. Brianna Mixter was a second team selection at the libero position. Co head coaches Wendy Smith and Curt Conser were named PAC coaches of the year following Genevaâ??s 17-1 mark in conference play.
