It really is amazing how one week can make such a difference in how a team is viewed by its opponents. The Geneva College menâ??s soccer team arrived in Florida last week as the only non-scholarship team to qualify for the NCCAA national tournament. By weekâ??s end, the rest of the field had a much better understanding of exactly how good the Golden Tornadoes were after they made a run into the national championship game. Representing Geneva College on the national stage, the menâ??s soccer team finished second in the eight-team field with victories over second seeded Palm Beach Atlantic and third seeded Judson before falling 2-1 to top seeded California Baptist in the championship. Jake McCracken scored a goal in all three matches to finish the season with 15 goals to tie the third highest single season mark in school history. Genevaâ??s overall record of 16-6-3 tied the school record for the third most victories in a season.

It was a rough week on the basketball court for the Golden Tornadoes. The womenâ??s team dropped PAC games to Thomas More and Bethany last week to open the conference schedule at 0-2. Geneva has started the new season with an overall record of 1-5 including five straight losses after winning the season opener. Junior guard Chelsea Dâ??Urso has been solid on the offensive end of the court with 19 points against Thomas More and 12 in the loss to Bethany. Dâ??Urso leads the Geneva team with her 11 points per game average. Beth DeLuca is averaging ten points per game while also tied for the team lead with 6.2 rebounds per game. Geneva will get two more cracks this week at picking up its first PAC victory with games against Waynesburg and Grove City.

In menâ??s basketball action, Geneva fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the PAC after dropping games to Thomas More and Bethany. It has been 30 years since the Golden Tornadoes have started a season at 1-6. Not since the 1981-82 season when Geneva finished the year at 1-23 have the Golden Tornadoes won just once in their first seven games. Despite the slow start, junior forward Matt Lorello has been quite special through the early going this year. Leading the Golden Tornadoes with 20.6 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game, Lorello is shooting an amazing 70% from the field. Lorello scored a grand total of 65 points all of last year and has posted 144 points through seven games of 2011. Geneva will host Waynesburg on Wednesday night in search of its first ever PAC victory. The Golden Tornadoes close out the first semester of games at Grove City on Saturday afternoon.
