It has been a long four years for the Geneva College menâ??s basketball team to watch the rest of the conference have its post-season tournament fun. The Golden Tornadoes hope it has been worth the wait as they get to join the party on Tuesday night. On the strength of a regular season finale victory, Geneva will begin post-season play at Thomas More on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the seniors for both the menâ??s and womenâ??s teams say good-bye in their final home games on Saturday night while two deserving candidates were the most recent to claim honorary â??Gâ?? plaques for their loyalty to Geneva College. The Geneva College indoor track and field teams took 11 student-athletes to Cedarville on Saturday to compete at the NCCAA national meet.

It was a long time in coming but the Geneva menâ??s basketball team put everything together on Saturday night and the senior trio of David Phillips, Lambros Svingos and Drew Santarsiero lifted the Golden Tornadoes to a 100-85 victory over Westminster in the regular season finale. The victory pushed Genevaâ??s overall record to 6-19 including a 5-11 record in conference play. The Golden Tornadoes finished the regular season in sixth place and will travel to Kentucky on Tuesday night to face the Saints in a first round PAC tournament quarter-final match-up. If Geneva gets the same effort from its seniors as it did on Saturday night, it could make for an interesting contest. Genevaâ??s senior trio combined for 74 of Genevaâ??s 100 points on Saturday with David Phillips scoring 31, Lambros Svingos posting 26 and Drew Santarsiero scoring 17.

Genevaâ??s womenâ??s team ended its season with a 58-42 loss to Westminster. The Golden Tornadoes ended the regular season with 12 straight losses and finished the year with an overall record of 3-22 and a conference mark of 2-16. Seniors Beth DeLuca and Rachel Rouan played their final games for Geneva this past week and were honored for their contributions on Saturday night. DeLuca finished her career with 961 career points which is good enough for 14th on the all-time list.

Prior to the menâ??s basketball game on Saturday night, two members of the Geneva College athletic family were given an honorary â??Gâ?? for their respective contributions to the Golden Tornadoes. Long-time broadcaster Bob Barrickman was honored for his 30 years of covering Geneva College athletics. Geneva assistant athletic-director and long-time employee of the Golden Tornadoes athletic department Rebecca Dittmar was also honored for her many outstanding years of service and support for Geneva College.

Competing on the national stage, Genevaâ??s indoor track qualifying athletes traveled to Cedarville for the NCCAA nationals on Saturday. On the womenâ??s side, Teammates Alayna Merkle (19:25.96) and Emily Hoobler (19:27.27) finished tenth and 11th respectively in the 5000 meter race. Liz Michalak, who qualified in both the high jump and long jump, turned in a pair of top 20 performances. The highlight for the womenâ??s team came in the shot put event. Kathryn Regalado turned in a fifth place finish with a distance of 38-11. Teammate Katherine Michalak finished seventh with a mark of 38-02.

Nick Edinger, who broke Genevaâ??s indoor school record in the 3000 meter event earlier in the year, finished 13th in the event with a time of 9:11.99. Edinger also competed in the 5000 meter race and turned in a seventh place finish with a mark of 15:39. Teammate Charles Walters finished 21st in a time of 16:23.
Mark Filitz qualified in both the long jump and the high jump. He posted a final distance of 17-11 in the long jump for a 21st place finish but gave his best performance in the triple jump. Filitz finished fifth overall with a distance of 40-09.75.
