The way Nick Edinger has opened the 2012 track and field season, Geneva College will be ordering some extra ink to rewrite the record books. Edinger had another brilliant effort on Saturday to highlight Genevaâ??s trip to Mt. Union. The womenâ??s team also enjoyed some highlights at Mount Union against an elite field of athletes. The womenâ??s basketball team gave two solid efforts last week but came up on the short end of tight losses to Grove City and Chatham. Meanwhile, the menâ??s team lost a heartbreaker at home to Grove City in its only game of the week.

The menâ??s indoor record for the 5000 meter indoor event has stood since 2006 when Andrew Foxenberg posted a time of 15:55. That mark was duplicated on Saturday when Nick Edinger took home first place in the 5000 meter race at Mt. Union in what was one of his finest moments yet. Edinger also qualified for the NCCAA national meet in the 5000 meter event just two weeks after breaking the school record and qualifying nationally in the 3000 meter race. Teammate Chuck Walters finished eighth in the 5000 meter race with an indoor personal best time that was just one second shy of qualifying for the national meet. Another personal best time was posted by Nate Mansor, who finished ninth in the 1000 meter race.

In womenâ??s action, Alayna Merkle (3rd) and Emily Hoobler (5th) each qualified for the NCCAA national meet in the 5000 meter event. Teammate Heidi Steiner finished ninth in the same race in her first indoor meet. In another highlight for the women, Katherine Michalak finished seventh in the shot put with another personal best effort. Geneva has a total of five student-athletes that have now qualified for the NCCAA national meet.

The menâ??s basketball team could do no wrong in the first half against Grove City last Wednesday night. Knocking down eight of their first ten three-point attempts, the Golden Tornadoes opened up a 12-point halftime lead. The Wolverines fought back in the second half and managed to take a 76-74 decision in handing Geneva its seventh loss on the last nine games. Wednesdayâ??s match-up with Grove City was Genevaâ??s only game of the week and it dropped its overall record to 5-15, including a 4-8 mark in the PAC. The Golden Tornadoes are currently is sole possession of sixth place in the PAC standings.

In womenâ??s basketball, Geneva put forth two solid efforts only to come up short against both Grove City and Chatham. Samantha Fisher scored 12 points in a 46-36 loss to Grove City last Wednesday while Beth DeLuca scored 16 points in a 40-38 loss to Chatham on Saturday. DeLucaâ??s 16 points made her just the 15th player in school history to reach the 900 point plateau for her career. The Golden Tornadoes have dropped eight straight games and fell to 3-18 for the season, including a 2-12 mark in the conference. Geneva will host Thiel on Wednesday looking for a season sweep against the Tomcats before heading to Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon.
