SMB_2403_lighting_480.jpgThe indoor track and field season opened up on Saturday with the Golden Tornadoes competing at Baldwin-Wallace. Meanwhile, the menâ??s basketball team posted its most impressive victory of the season with an overtime victory over Thiel College. The womenâ??s team dropped a pair of conference games and are still seeking its first win in the PAC.

All the usual suspects were featured at the seasonâ??s opening indoor track and field meet. To nobodyâ??s surprise, senior Nick Edinger managed to qualify for the NCCAA National meet in his first outing of the season. Edinger finished third in the one mile event with a time of 4:30.08, which was just two seconds off of the school record. Ryan White also qualified nationally with a fifth place finish in the 55 meter finals. White posted a time of 6.92, which was just 0.03 seconds away from breaking Genevaâ??s school record. Other highlights on the menâ??s side included top ten finishes from Ryan White and Jacob Mellinger in the 200 meter event while Chez Anderson finished fourth overall in the 500 meter race.

In womenâ??s action, the 3000 meter event featured two Geneva national qualifiers as Sarah-Noel Meek and Alayna Merkle each qualified nationally with a fourth and sixth place finish respectively. Meek posted a time of 11:05.51 with Merkle crossing the line at 11:13.52. The only other top ten finishes for the women came in the shot put where Sara Williams (fifth) and Kayla Jackson (seventh) each turned in solid performances.

Geneva menâ??s head basketball coach Jeff Santarsiero has been waiting for his team to put together a solid 40 minutes. On Saturday, Santarsiero watched the Golden Tornadoes put together a solid 45 minutes in an 87-86 overtime victory over Thiel. The victory pushed Genevaâ??s overall record to 2-15 including a 2-7 mark in the PAC. Matt Lorello was 9-10 from the field and finished with a team best 25 points while also posting three blocks on the defensive end of the floor. Perhaps the biggest spark for Geneva came off the bench as Zac Rorick scored 16 points and knocked down five three-point field goals including one late in regulation and one to open the overtime session. Earlier in the week, Geneva dropped a conference game at Washington & Jefferson and is still seeking its first road win of the season. Geneva will have a light week with just one home game against Bethany on Wednesday night.

Despite another hot shooting day for Heidi Mann on Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a 64-52 decision to Thiel to remain winless in the Presidentsâ?? Athletic Conference. Mann scored 20 points in the loss and made four three-point field goals. Samantha Fisher posted 12 points in the loss to go along with five rebounds. Last Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes remained winless on the road with a 70-41 loss at Washington & Jefferson. For the season, Geneva is 2-15 overall and 0-10 in conference play. Geneva will look for that first conference victory on Wednesday when it hosts Bethany College. The Golden Tornadoes will then welcome Chatham University to Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday as part of the womenâ??s basketball alumni day.
