On the scoreboard, it was an unhappy homecoming on College Hill as the football team dropped a 21-20 heartbreaker to undefeated Waynesburg. The womenâ??s soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Grove City while the menâ??s team suffered an untimely 0-0 double overtime tie with those same Wolverines. After a promising start to the PAC womenâ??s tennis championships on Friday, the Golden Tornadoes suffered an 0-4 Saturday that resulted in one second place finish and four fourth place finishes in singles and doubles flight competition. While the outcomes of those games were not what Geneva fans were looking for, the display that happened before and halftime of the football game was something to behold. The Geneva College marching band was joined by numerous members of the alumni band and entertained a crowd of over 6000 at Reeves Field. The atmosphere at Geneva football games is second to none and much of that success has to do with the incredible success of the marching band under the direction of Don Kephart. Mr. Kephart was recognized before the game for 30 years of incredible service and we would be remiss if we didnâ??t offer our sincere thank you to him and his staff here for an amazing job well done! There is more to success than the final score and on Saturday afternoon, Geneva College should stand proud for the spectacle that is homecoming and for the work that is done each and every week by everyone involved in putting on a top notch performance.

When that same Geneva marching band took the field for its halftime show, the football score was on the right side as Geneva took a 13-6 lead into the locker room against Waynesburg after a pair of Rocco Colavecchia touchdowns. The Golden Tornadoes were unable to hold the lead but a circus catch from Corey Oâ??Patchen reclaimed the Geneva lead in the third quarter. After the Yellow Jackets again surged in front, Geneva had one last attempt at a game winning field goal but came up short. Perhaps the star of the game for Geneva was on the defensive end of the field as Dillon Goodell posted a career best 18 tackles to go along with a pair of interceptions. Geneva fell to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the PAC with a road game at Grove City coming up next Saturday at 7 pm.

Genevaâ??s menâ??s soccer team put itself In a great spot to control its own destiny for a PAC regular season title after defeating Waynesburg 2-0 on Wednesday night. The Golden Tornadoes were unable to maintain that momentum on Saturday as they could not solve the Grove City defense in a 0-0 double overtime tie. Bryan Butler made seven saves to register his third consecutive shut-out and seventh for the year, which is the third highest single season total in school history. Geneva will now take its 8-5-3 overall record and 4-1-2 conference mark into the final week of the season with only a home match against Thiel next Saturday left on the slate. The Golden Tornadoes will need to win and get some help in the form of losses from both Westminster and Thomas More to claim their first PAC regular season title.

The womenâ??s soccer team also had a big opportunity slip away on Saturday as Geneva held its own destiny for grabbing the fourth and final PAC play-off spot with a win against Grove City. The Golden Tornadoes dropped a 4-0 decision to the Wolverines and fell to 7-8-1 overall and 3-4 in the league. Geneva watched a 2-0 lead disappear on Wednesday in a 3-2 loss at Waynesburg. Goals by Elise and Heidi Mann were not enough to hold off the Yellow Jackets in a critical loss. Heidi Mann continued her incredible freshman campaign with her team leading 13th goal of the season in the loss. Geneva will host Chatham and Thiel next week in an effort to climb the standings and also try to finish about .500 and qualify for NCCAA post-season.

Conference championships are certainly something the volleyball team is used to after the 2011 season. However, the 2012 campaign has proven to be much more difficult for the Golden Tornadoes. Following a 3-2 win at Westminster on Wednesday night, Geneva got another dose of first place Thomas More in a 3-0 loss to the Saints in Kentucky on Friday night. With three PAC matches left on the regular season schedule, Geneva is 19-9 overall and 10-5 in conference play. Currently sitting in fifth place in the standings, Geneva will need to move up one more spot to guarantee a home play-off match in the first round of the PAC tournament. Following home matches with Bethany on Tuesday and Saint Vincent on Thursday, the Golden Tornadoes close out the regular season at Grove City next Saturday.

The cross country teams enjoyed the homecoming weekend away from the course after record setting performances at Oberlin a week ago. Next Saturday, Geneva will be put to the test at the PAC Championships for both men and women. Nick Edinger broke his own school record last time and five Geneva women all posted personal best times in preparation for the conference championships.

Christine Bullock advanced further than any Geneva tennis player at the PAC championships this past weekend. Bullock won a pair of matches on Friday to advance to the flight five singles final. Bullock lost in the championship round and posted a second place finish for the Golden Tornadoes. Brittany Kress, Alison Beattie and the doubles team of Kress and Courtney Light all lost in consolation finals and brought home fourth place finishes for Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes finished fourth overall at the PAC meet but came away with perhaps the biggest prize of the day. Genevaâ??s tennis team was awarded the PAC sportsmanship trophy for womenâ??s tennis for their amazing attitudes throughout the entire 2012 season. Congratulations to coach Craft and the Geneva women for a job well done.
