geneva_tornado_logo_web.pngIt was a perfect week for Geneva soccer in the win column with a combined record of 4-0 for men and women. The volleyball team won two out of three in conference action while the tennis team saw its four match winning streak halted in Latrobe. The cross country teams enjoyed some R and R over the weekend which is something head coach Geno DeMarco and the Golden Tornadoes football team could use after working overtime for a record third straight game.

The womenâ??s soccer team won six games in 2011, which included only a pair of wins in conference play. The 2012 Golden Tornadoes matched both of those numbers just a little more than halfway through the season. Geneva posted back to back shut-out victories last week over Saint Vincent (3-0) and Westminster (2-0). Heidi Mann scored her 10th and 11th goals of the year in the win against a Saint Vincent team that came into that game with an 8-1 record. Risa Tillman also found the net to open the scoring early in the first half. On Saturday, Geneva got goals from Maura Allen and Rhetta King in a win over Westminster. Anna McMullen made six saves against Saint Vincent and three more against Westminster to pick up her fourth and fifth shut-outs of the season. Geneva moved its overall record to 6-5-1 and a 2-1 mark in conference play.

Genevaâ??s menâ??s soccer team seems to back to mid-season form as it remained unbeaten in conference play with PAC wins over Saint Vincent and Westminster. The Golden Tornadoes used a dramatic comeback and a game winning goal by Teddy Krzywiecki with less than three minutes in regulation for a 3-2 win over Saint Vincent. After spotting Westminster and early lead on Saturday, Geneva stormed back for a 3-1 victory in New Wilmington. Geneva used goals from Stephen Lawrence, Jeb Nash and Jon Mathoslah for the victory. Bryan Butler made four saves in the win over Westminster to help Geneva improve to 6-4-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the PAC.

Genevaâ??s volleyball team had to scratch and claw for a five set victory at Washington & Jefferson last Tuesday night. After falling behind two sets to one, the Golden Tornadoes rallied back and won the fifth and deciding set 15-11. On Saturday, Geneva tried to dethrone undefeated Thomas More but came up short 3-1. In Saturdayâ??s night cap, the Golden Tornadoes cruised to a 3-0 victory over Grove City. With two out of three victories last week, Geneva improved to 16-7 overall and 7-3 in league play. Ashley Davis and Kristland McCracken combined for 33 kills in the win at Washington & Jefferson. One of the highlights on Saturday came with the awarding of a game ball to senior Maggie Bowersox for becoming just the seventh player in school history to join the 1000 kill club. Bowersox continued her outstanding play with 12 kills against Grove City.

Genevaâ??s tennis team extended its season long win streak to four with a 7-2 non-conference victory over Penn State Altoona on Friday afternoon. In that match, Julie Kline and Jen Bullock teamed up for a doubles victory before each went on to win singles matches later in the day. The Golden Tornadoes saw their streak come to end on Saturday morning with an 8-1 loss to undefeated Saint Vincent. The only Geneva point came in third doubles where Courtney Light and Brittany Kress improved to 9-1 on the season. The Golden Tornadoes are 8-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play with only a match against Westminster later today left on the regular season schedule. The PAC Championships are set for October 19-20.

The cross country team enjoyed a weekend away from the course to prepare for action this coming Saturday at Oberlin College. The meet at Oberlin will be the final regular season tune up before the conference championships on October 27th.

It is a good thing that Genevaâ??s football team and coaching staff doesnâ??t get paid for overtime because it would be costing somebody a pretty penny. The Golden Tornadoes found themselves in extra time for the third straight game on Saturday with this result not nearly as fulfilling as was last weekâ??s. In yet another see-saw battle, Geneva and Bethany battled each other for four quarters that ended in a 36-36 tie. Bethany scored what appeared to be the game winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining in regulation, but the Golden Tornadoes were far from finished. In two plays, Geneva moved the ball to the Bethany 41 yard line with four seconds left on the clock. Zack Hayward flung a pass from midfield on the final play of the game and it fell into the arms of Rocco Colavecchia on the last play of regulation to send the game into overtime. Bethany scored the only points of the extra session as Geneva fell to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in league play. Colavecchia ran for 136 yards including a 65 yard touchdown earlier in the game and also led the way with six catches for 79 yards. Geneva will head out for its fifth road game in six weeks when it faces Saint Vincent in Latrobe on Saturday afternoon.
