On a picturesque afternoon on College Hill, the Geneva football team made things even brighter with its third victory over Westminster in as many years. The cross country teams closed out the 2012 season with a solid showing at the NCAA Division III Mid-East regional meet. In soccer, Genevaâ??s women saw their season come to an end at the NCCAA East regional tournament while the men took their first post-season steps with a victory at Mt. Vernon in the East regional quarter-finals on Saturday. While the fall season is coming to a close, the winter season is just getting started. The menâ??s and womenâ??s basketball teams each open the 2012-13 season on Friday night.
Genevaâ??s football team saved the best for last as it closed the curtain on the 2012 season with an impressive 33-14 victory over Westminster. The Golden Tornadoes ended their season with an overall record of 3-7 with the third win over the Titans in as many years. Rocco Colavecchia scored three times in increasing his PAC leading total to 20 touchdowns for the season. Zack Hayward threw for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns including a 46 yard hook-up to senior Corey Oâ??Patchen. Oâ??Patchen caught eight passes for 108 yards and ended his brilliant career with the fourth most receiving yards and fourth most receiving touchdowns in school history.
In was only fitting that Nick Edinger ended his cross country career with yet another school record. Finishing 29th at the NCAA Division III Mid-east regional meet, Edinger crossed the line with a school record time of 26:14. For his efforts, Edinger was named an All-Regional performer for the first time in his career. In womenâ??s action, Geneva finished 15th overall out of 49 competing schools at the Division III regional meet. Sarah-Noel Meek led the women with a 44th place finish while teammates Alayna Merkle (56) and Emily Hoobler (66) also turned in top notch performances.
The womenâ??s soccer team saw its season come to a close with a 7-1 loss at Houghton College in the NCCAA East region semi-finals. The Golden Tornadoes ended their season with an overall record of 9-9-1. Freshman Heidi Mann closed out a record setting season with her 18th goal of the year, which set a new standard for freshmen women at Geneva College.
Genevaâ??s menâ??s soccer team took its first post-season steps on Saturday with a 2-1 victory at Mt. Vernon Nazarene. The Golden Tornadoes upended the fourth seeded Cougars to advance to the regional semi-final match at Houghton this Friday. Teddy Krzwiecki and Jeb Nash each scored first half goals and sophomore keeper Bryan Butler did the rest in holding off Mt. Vernon down the stretch. Geneva will take its 10-6-4 overall record into the NCCAA semi-finals this weekend. Roberts Wesleyan and Nyack will play in the other semi-final with the winners meeting in the regional championship on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
The 2012-13 basketball season opens up this weekend with the womenâ??s team heading to Houghton for a pair of games to open the new season. Geneva will play Pitt-Bradford and Penn State Greater Allegheny. The menâ??s team will host its annual Coaches vs. Cancer tournament on Friday and Saturday with games set against Penn State Fayette and Pitt-Greensburg. The womenâ??s team is trying to rebound from a 3-22 record a year ago while the menâ??s team will look to get back to its winning ways after a 6-19 season in 2011-12.
