DSC0317_small.jpgThe snow machine stopped and the sun came out just long enough on Saturday for the Geneva College softball team to sneak in a doubleheader victory over Hiram College. Meanwhile, the track and field team took advantage of the blue skies with some outstanding performances at the CAL U Early Bird Meet. Like the rest of Western Pennsylvania, the Geneva baseball team is simply waiting for a break in the weather to get back on the field after having to sit and watch the snow fall for over a week.

The baseball and softball teams have become quite adept at rescheduling games. Because of the cold weather, snow and poor field conditions, there hasnâ??t been many pitches being thrown. While the baseball team continued to wait out the weather, the softball team did manage to sneak in a doubleheader against Hiram on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes picked up a doubleheader sweep over Terriers by scores of 5-3 and 5-4. Samantha Johnson picked up the victory in game one with Andrea Hinds recording the final four outs to register the save. Offensively, Geneva picked up ten hits including a 3-3 effort from Leah Prisuta. In the nightcap, Hinds threw an eight-inning complete game for her second victory of the season. She also ended the game with a one-out run scoring single in the bottom of the eighth. Dayna Hicks had three hits with Christina Fuqua and Ashley Davis each picking up a pair in the victory. Geneva pushed its overall record to 6-8 while it waits for another opportunity to hit the field.

Jacob Mellinger turned in a personal best performance on Saturday as the freshman took home first place in the 400 meter race at the CAL U Early Bird Meet. Mellinger also finished fourth in the 200 meter race with yet another personal best. Nick Edinger rewrote another Geneva record by breaking the 10K mark by 30 seconds. Other personal bests were turned in by Aaron Marga and Nate Dunn in the 200 meter event.

In womenâ??s action, Alayna Merkle qualified for the NCCAA nationals with a personal best time in the 1500 meter race while teammates Sarah-Noel Meek and Anna Kluitenberg did the same in the 10K event. On the field, Kayla Jackson and Katherine Michalak turned in qualifying performances in the discus and shot put respectively.
