Just two weeks into the fall season, it is becoming increasingly evident that the womenâ??s cross country team at Geneva College may have something very special brewing. After posting a team victory in week one at Westminster, the Golden Tornadoes picked up victory number two at Waynesburg on Saturday. The womenâ??s tennis team enjoyed a perfect 2-0 week including its first conference action. It is also apparent that the volleyball team is on to something when a 4-1 record for the week is a disappointment. Genevaâ??s volleyball team won four of five matches but suffered its first setback of the new season on Saturday. The womenâ??s soccer team dropped another one-goal decision in its only match of the week while the menâ??s team split a pair of matches including a disappointing home opener on Saturday night. Battling the 18th ranked team in the country in Hobart College, the football team returned from its 5 ½ hour trip on Saturday with a 28-7 loss and an 0-2 record.

Not much can slow down the womenâ??s cross country team these days and that includes a driving rain storm. Running in much less than favorable conditions, the Golden Tornadoes picked up their second overall victory of the season with a win at the Waynesburg Invitational. Geneva took home first place in a field of 14 schools with an overall point total of 39, which was 15 points better than the next closest competitor. Defeating PAC schools Waynesburg, Saint Vincent, W & J, Bethany and Chatham, the Golden Tornadoes also ran past NCAA Division II foe California, PA on their way to victory. Freshman sensation Sarah-Noel Meek finished third overall with a time of 23:46 becoming just the eighth Geneva female to post a sub-24 minute time in school history. Alayna Merkle finished fifth and Emily Hooblerâ??s seventh place time of 24:46 was a personal best by an astounding 59 seconds.

Genevaâ??s tennis team completed its match with Chatham last Tuesday to pick up a 5-4 victory in the conference opener. Then the Golden Tornadoes rallied for a 5-4 win at LaRoche before getting washed out because of rain against Washington & Jefferson on Saturday. Christine Bullock enjoyed a perfect week with a pair of wins in both singles and doubles. Darcie Shaffer picked up a singles victory on Tuesday to serve as the difference in the one point victory. On Friday, Geneva needed every point to be LaRoche and the doubles victory by Brittany Kress and Courtney Light was one for the ages as they rallied from 6-0 down to win the set 8-6 for the deciding point in the win. Kress also won her singles match along with Alison Beattie. Geneva begins the new week with an overall record of 2-1 and a mark of 1-0 in conference play.

One had to figure that the Geneva volleyball team would lose a match at some point this fall, but the Golden Tornadoes were hoping to ride the undefeated wave just a bit longer. On Saturday, Geneva dropped its first match of the season with a 3-1 setback to Hiram College at the Hiram Tournament. Despite that loss, the Golden Tornadoes were still 3-1 at the tournament and 4-1 for the week that included a 3-1 win at Saint Vincent to open conference play. Geneva enjoyed yet another balanced attack by the likes of Kristland McCracken, Maggie Bowersox and Ashley Davis at the net. Deanna Briody was named to the Hiram All-Tournament team for her 165 assists and 11.0 assist per game average in Genevaâ??s four matches. After a pair of conference matches at Chatham on Tuesday, Geneva will finally get to play its home opener on Wednesday at 7 pm against Waynesburg.

Genevaâ??s womensâ??s soccer team has played three matches this season with each resulting in a 2-1 final score. Last Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes played their only match of the week and dropped a 2-1 decision at Point Park University. Freshman Heidi Mann continued her scorching start with her fourth goal of the season. Mann has scored every goal for Geneva in the first three games of 2012. The Golden Tornadoes take their 1-2 record into the new week with a pair of non-conference matches on the slate.

The menâ??s soccer team posted an impressive road victory last Tuesday at Fredonia State. Teddy Krzywieckiâ??s first goal of the season on a feed from Garrett Masters was the only goal Geneva and freshman keeper Bryan Butler would need for their second victory and second shut-out of the season. The Golden Tornadoes were unable to build off of that momentum when they returned for the home opener against Allegheny on Saturday night. The Gators scored three first half goals and held Geneva off the board for 90 minutes in a 3-0 final. Geneva settled for a 2-2 overall record at weekâ??s end and will look forward to a tri-fecta of home matches this week beginning with LaRoche College at Merriman Complex tonight.

A 5 ½ hour bus trip, a torrential rain storm and the 18th ranked team in the country on the other side of the line was too much for Geneva to overcome in the second game of the year. The Golden Tornadoes defense, which allowed 56 points in week one, made a drastic turnaround and stood toe to toe with an outstanding football team. The only two touchdowns for Hobart in the first half came on a pair of one-yard drives following two blocked punts. Genevaâ??s offense struggled to find consistency for most of the afternoon but did get into the end zone on a Rocco Colavecchia 22-yard run in the fourth quarter. Ryan Fronius and Dillon Goodell each had ten tackles with Fronius coming up with a forced fumble to set up Genevaâ??s only score of the game. Geneva will begin conference play this week at Thiel for the third consecutive road game.
