Many college students find public speaking to be too embarrassing or too difficult and just do not want to waste their time and money on a college course covering the topic. This common perspective of college students can be detrimental. Learning the basics of public speaking, even just taking one course, can greatly benefit your educational growth even if you aren’t a communications major or even close to one. There are several ways in which public speaking skills can be beneficial to any college student in any field of study, here are just a few:
Public speaking is an excellent way to break out of your comfort zone and build confidence. Speaking out loud to a class or an even larger group of people is difficult for most people at first. Becoming comfortable and proficient at speaking out loud is a great confidence and self-esteem booster.
Public speaking is also a great way to enhance your speaking skills. Excellent or above average speaking skills are always a good way to look more professional and let others know that you have an edge over the competition.
Public speaking is a great way to learn how to present information to a group effectively and efficiently. The more easily and confidently you can present information, the more credible you become to your audience.
Being able to speak confidently and authoritatively will help you climb the ranks of nearly any organization within any field and allow you to motivate others below you. Also, being able to speak confidently under pressure can be an excellent skill when it comes to meetings with superiors or subordinates.
As most public speaking is done in a time frame, knowing how much time you have and how to use it effectively helps to strengthen time management skills. These strengthened time management skills can then be applied to many other tasks.
Taking a public speaking course can have many beneficial outcomes, even if you have no aspirations to find a career in public speaking. The skills learned within a public speaking course can be translated into many other fields of study and help anyone to become a better student and future employee!
Geneva College offers public speaking courses to undergraduate students of all majors; the only prerequisite for these public speaking courses is Intro to Communications or COM 101 (which every Geneva undergraduate student must take). Public speaking courses are also offered to all students in the adult degree programs. Within Geneva’s graduate degree programs, speaking instruction is included in graduate programs such as MBA, Leadership Studies and Higher Education.
