If you're looking to combine your interest in aviation with a well-rounded business education, your best bet is Geneva College's Business Aviation program, which provides the business education needed to broaden an otherwise narrow career path. The dual-degree program is run in partnership with the Community College of Beaver County (CCBC), which is home to the nation's top aviation program. Enrolled students emerge with a thorough understanding of aviation technology, as well as a more comprehensive business background that can be used to transition into a variety of rewarding career fields. How does the dual-degree Business Aviation program work?
Students enrolled in Geneva's Business Aviation program takes classes at both CCBC and Geneva College. The first and last year of the program are spent completing coursework at Geneva, while the second and third years largely take place at CCBC. Upon completing the program, students emerge with both a bachelor's degree from Geneva and an Associate in Applied Science in Professional Piloting, Aerospace Engineering, or Air Traffic Control from CCBC.
What types of classes do Business Aviation students take?
Students emerge from Geneva and CCBC's Business Aviation program with an in-depth understanding of several subject areas. Aviation technology is a prime area of study, with many students taking such courses as Commercial Ground Theory and Aerodynamics. However, specific coursework may vary somewhat based on the type of certification students choose to pursue. Those involved in the Professional Piloting degree program learn to fly out of the Beaver County Airport.
In addition to exploring aerodynamics and other aviation topics, Business Aviation students also learn about several essential business concepts. Students can choose from a variety of business courses, but most take Business Foundations, Principles of Management, and Quantitative Analysis.
What career paths are available to Business Aviation graduates?
Many Business Aviation students aspire to become pilots for major airlines, but this is by no means the only career opportunity available to those enrolled in Geneva and CCBC's dual-degree program. Business Aviation graduates also find work in aerospace engineering, aviation mechanics, and air traffic control. Others build on the professional skills and knowledge they've gained through Geneva's business courses and go on to hold administration and marketing positions at airlines and aerospace manufacturing companies.
What is the career outlook for aviation and related professions?
The career outlook for aviation varies somewhat from one field to the next, but in general, those who find jobs in aviation can expect to earn a very impressive income. The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates job growth of 5 percent for pilots and 1 percent for aviation mechanics between 2014 and 2024. In 2015, the annual median pay for airline and commercial pilots was $102,520, while air traffic controllers earned an impressive median annual pay of $122,950. However, the job outlook for air traffic controllers was less than average, so it is wise for those pursuing this line of work to have an alternate option in place.

After ministering in local churches for nearly 20 years, Geneva College alumnus Kent Chevalier '99 accepted a unique ministry position as the chaplain for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers through the Athletes in Action organization.
