Coming in spring 2019, the men’s volleyball team will take their competition from the club sport level to the varsity level. Competing in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC), Geneva will compete with eight other Division III college teams for an AMCC Men’s Volleyball title. Geneva students who follow our club sports programs with any sort of consistency know one thing for certain, our club men’s volleyball team is nothing short of dominant.

While only the Men’s Volleyball team will be competing within the AMCC rather than the President’s Athletic Conference (PAC) as the other Geneva teams, Geneva has ties with the AMCC nonetheless. AMCC Commissioner Donna Ledwin welcomes Geneva with open arms stating, “AMCC members have competed against their teams in many sports over the years, so we enjoy a strong level of familiarity with and respect for each other.  It’s a very good fit.”

Athletic Director Van Zanic states “We are extremely excited to announce the addition of men’s volleyball as a varsity sport. Our club volleyball program has enjoyed great success in recent years and the timing is right to make the move to varsity status.” As athletic director, Zanic will now keep track of 17 Geneva varsity sports with the addition of men’s volleyball.

Excitement was not only shared by the athletics’ staff but also by the men’s volleyball club team players. Josh Ehko, a veteran on the club team, states, “It’s been a privilege to play on the men’s volleyball team, I’ve enjoyed the friendships I’ve made and the competition and success we’ve had as a team. There’s a lot of excitement for the opportunity to go varsity, and I know the guys will take advantage of this great opportunity.”

Geneva has announced the head coach as Curt Conser, a veteran of Geneva volleyball who served in several coaching roles with the college’s Women’s Volleyball team from 2000 to 2016. Conser will officially begin as full-time coach on June 1, but he will spend the next several months beginning to build the program through recruiting and by working with the club team. He will have the program up and running in the fall of 2018 and ready to begin competitive play in spring 2019.

Following a two-year obligatory waiting period, in the 2020-2021 season, the team has the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The Men’s Volleyball team will surely give Geneva students, faculty and community yet another group cheer for. Geneva welcomes anyone who would like to play competitive NCAA men’s volleyball to contact Geneva Athletics for more information – athletics@geneva.edu or fill out the Recruit Me form for Men’s Volleyball at athletics.geneva.edu.
