Why I Come Back to Geneva Each Year

The College

The college selection process was one of the most stressful times in my life. I was conflicted, unsure, and had a lot of questions that couldn’t be answered completely until I actually attended a college: What will living at this college be like? What about this other college? Will I like it here? I had glimpses of answers to these questions on visits, but ultimately I wouldn’t know if I made the right decision until I made a decision—and that was a scary thought, because it was the biggest decision I had to make in my life thus far.

Ultimately I chose Geneva, and here I am about to enter my senior year. I can honestly say I made the right decision. One of the ways this is evident is in the way I approach each year. In high school, I dreaded the end of the summer vacation and the start of the school year. I didn’t want to go back to school; I just wanted more weeks of rest & relaxation.

But that changed. After I graduated from high school, I was excited about my freshman year at Geneva, as I was eager to start a new chapter in my life. That was the first time I really looked forward to the start of a school year.

As I have progressed throughout my college career, that feeling hasn’t left me. As each school year approaches, I no longer dread the end of summer vacation the way I did in high school. Geneva College has given me a lot to be thankful to and look forward to each year, and it has given me a lot of reasons to keep coming back.

One Geneva aspect I love and that keeps me coming back is the way the professors are available to help me. This is something I did not consider as much when I was thinking about where I wanted to go, but it turned out to be one of the most important blessings of Geneva College. At a larger school, it would be significantly harder to find time to meet with a professor if I had questions or needed help on a particular project. There have been numerous Geneva professors who have graciously set aside time for me to answer questions I had and help me expand on my learning outside of the classroom setting.

And the professors have been there for me outside of academics, as well. I was going through a difficult time in the fall of my junior year, and one of my professors helped me through it and helped me figure out what to do.

I am also involved in athletics, where I have met some of my best friends and had some of the best experiences I will never forget. In the same way professors are there to help me in and out of the classroom, my coaches have also been there to help me in and out of athletic seasons and contexts.

One of the most influential reasons for my returning each year are the bonds and friendships made with the people at Geneva. I met a lot of my friends through athletics, but I'm grateful that Geneva athletes don’t exclusively segregate themselves into athletic cliques. In the fall I run cross country, but during my freshman year I met one of my closest friends who was a football player, and we ended up rooming together the following year. Meeting and forming friendships with people from different backgrounds and with different interests has been an amazing blessing to me during my time at Geneva,

Those are a few of the reasons I enthusiastically return to Geneva each year, but there are countless other reasons why people return. Some of my friends are involved with multiple on-campus Bible Studies that keep them rooted in the word of God and focused on what is really important. Geneva is a place where something like that has the unique potential to happen. I also have friends who are involved in a variety of on-campus activities like intramurals, Upper Room, and FCA. What’s great about this is that as I’ve gotten to see what my friends are interested in at Geneva, I have become involved with some things in which I would not otherwise have gotten involved.

There are a lot of reasons why I enthusiastically return to Geneva each school year, and as I approach my final year as an undergraduate, I hope to make the most of what God has blessed me with, and I look forward to the blessings he has in store for me in the upcoming months at Geneva College.
