All three programs (Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling; and School Counseling) are 60-credit programs and are designed in accordance with national counselor certification and state licensure standards and provide students with academic training necessary to become professional counselors. The School Counseling Program additionally prepares students to be certified as elementary and/or secondary school counselors by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
All students receive exposure to core knowledge of the profession, which includes developmental theory, career development, assessment, research, ethics, multicultural awareness, counseling theory, and group work, as well as training in the skills of helping. All students are required to participate in a 10-hour group laboratory designed to train group facilitators. Each student receives intense individual and group clinical supervision during practicum and 600-hour internship. Recent graduates of the programs have found employment in a variety of work settings including schools, clinics, church counseling centers, and public and private agencies.
Both Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Marriage, Couple and Family are offered in their entirety at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA, as well as online. The School Counseling Program is offered only online.
We are pleased to announce that all three programs offered in the M.A. in Counseling Program are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) through March 31, 2024, under the 2016 standards.
