Determine if you are using wired connection, wireless connection, or both
If wireless, follow instructions on connecting to GENEVASTUDENT
If wired, plug Ethernet cable straight into the computer from the wall jack
Wired Ethernet access is available in Pearce, Memorial, McKee, Clarke, and Kerr Halls, the study areas in McCartney Library, and also Swanson and Barbato House
Wireless internet access is available in all residence halls as well as in many other locations across campus
Activate wireless and/or wired account
This step should not be necessary for PCs and laptops
Determine your MAC address
You no longer need to supply your MAC address to connect your PC or laptop
Double-click on the file (geneva-student-wireless-root.der) to open it
Click the 'Install Certificate' button and follow instructions to install the certificate into windows
After the certificate has been installed, the downloaded file can be deleted
These instructions assume that your wireless card is being controlled by Windows. If your card is being controlled by manufacturer's drivers and you want to keep it like that, you'll need to work out the correct settings in the manufacturer's software
Double-click on the file (geneva-student-wireless-root.der) to open it
Click the “Install Certificate” button
Click the “Next” button
Click the "Place all certificates in the following store" radio button
Click the "Browse" button
Choose "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" and click OK button
Click the “Next” button then the “Finish” button
A popup window will say that the import was successful, Click OK
A warning dialog box comes up. Choose “Yes” to accept the certificate
Click OK on the Certificate window
For Mac OS X (10.4 Tiger):
Download the security certificate from https://www.techserv.geneva.edu and save it to your hard drive (any location on your computer is fine – just remember where you saved it!)
Next, double click the file "geneva-student-wireless-root.der" to import the certificate into your Keychain Access files. If double-clicking the file does not default to importing into Keychain Access, you will need to CTRL-Click on the "geneva-student-wireless-root.der" file (or right-click), and select the option to "Open With" from the context menu, and then select "Keychain Access" from the list of available programs to open this file with
When Keychain Access opens, it will prompt asking if you want to "add the certificate(s) from the file 'geneva-student-wireless-root.der' to a keychain?" It will then provide an option box titled "Keychain:" here, the option "login" is already selected -- however, you need to change this option to instead reflect the keychain "X509Anchors." (As a side note, this will need to be done with administrator privileges -- OS X will prompt you for your administrator username and password)
Once the "geneva-student-wireless-root.der" file has been successfully imported into the "X509Anchors" keychain, you may close the Keychain Access application.
Configure Wireless Connection (WPA2)
For windows XP (requires SP2
To add a new wireless connection:
Open properties for the wireless card.
Go to the "Wireless Networks" tab.
Enable "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" checkbox
Under "Preferred Networks" section, click the 'Add' button In 'Wireless network properties' window, under the 'Association' tab
For the network name (SSID), enter "GENEVASTUDENT" (all caps)
For the Network Authentication, pick "WPA2" (if WPA2 is not listed, you may need to install XP update KB893357, and/or install the latest drivers for your wireless card.)
For Data encryption, pick "AES"
Under the Connection tab
Uncheck "Connect when the network is in range"
Under the Authentication tab
For EAP type, pick "Protected EAP (PEAP)"
Uncheck “Authenticate as computer”
Click on the ‘Properties’ button
Under "Trusted Root Certificate Authorities"
Pick "Geneva Student Wireless Authentication"
For "Select Authentication Method", pick "Secured password(EAP-MSCHAP-v2)"
Click on the 'Configure' button
In "EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties" window,
uncheck "Automatically use my Windows login name"

List all available wireless nets and connect to GENEVASTUDENT click on the alert balloon over the network icon to enter your username and password

To add a new wireless connection:

Click "Manage wireless networks" in the left pane.
Click Add in the window that comes up.
Click "Manually create a network profile"
Fill in the following information: - Network name: "GENEVASTUDENT" (no quotes, all caps) - Security type: WPA2-Enterprise - Encryption type: AES
Uncheck "Start this connection automatically" and check "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting".
Click next.
Click "Change connection settings" and choose the Security tab
Under "Choose a network authentication method" choose "Protected EAP (PEAP)"
Uncheck "Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network"

Make sure "Validate server certificate" is checked and "Connect to these servers" is unchecked.
Under "Trusted Root Certification Authority" Check "Geneva Student Wireless Authentication"
Check "Do not prompt user to authorize servers or trusted certification authorities"
Under "Select Authentication Method" choose "Secured password(EAP-MSCHAP v2)",
Then click Configure button
In the window that pops up uncheck "Automatically use my Windows login name and password" and click OK

Click OK for the "GENEVASTUDENT Wireless Network properties" window.
Click Close button for the "Manually connect to a wireless network" window
HOW TO CONNECT:
Click the Start button, then "Connect To"
Choose the "GENEVASTUDENT" network and click Connect button
Click on "Enter/select additional log on information" and type your user name and password.
Leave the "Logon Domain" field blank and click OK button.
When it says "Successfully connected to GENEVASTUDENT", click the close button.

The computer should attempt to connect automatically

Choose the "GENEVASTUDENT" network and click “Connect” button
Click on "Enter/select additional log on information" and type your user name and password
When it says "Successfully connected to GENEVASTUDENT", click the close button
You are now connected, and you are now ready to install Safe Connect NAC client
For Mac OS X (10.4 Tiger):
To add a new wireless connection:
Open up the Internet Connection application (found in your Applications folder), and add a "New 802.1X Connection" (found in the File Menu). Go to the new 802.1X tab and open the "Configuration: Edit Configuration" option box. Name the connection something useful, such as "Geneva Student WPA2"
While still in the "Edit Configuration" dialog box, change the Network Port option to reflect the "Airport," and fill in your User Name and Password (same as your previous wireless login info). Then, select the Wireless Network option "GENEVASTUDENT," and be sure that the Authentication option is set to "PEAP" as "On," and all other options are turned off (or un-checked). Also, select and drag the "PEAP" option to the top of the list of the various protocols. Click the "OK" button on the bottom to return to the previous window
Click on the "Connect" button, enter your Geneva username and wireless password if prompted and you should be connected
Download the Safe Connect client
Safe Connect is a replacement for Cisco Safe Connect
Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox
You will automatically be redirected to a webpage to download the Safe Connect client
Open the installer for Safe Connect and follow the onscreen directions
Log into Safe Connect with your username and password – this is the same password you use for web registration
Safe Connect will check to see if your computer is up to date regarding Windows/antivirus/antispyware
If any of these things are out of date you will be granted limited Internet access to update them

How do I install Safe Connect?.
To download and install Safe Connect you must first be connected to Geneva’s network, either through a wireless or a wired connection depending on your residence. Once connected to the network open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, and a link to download Safe Connect will automatically be displayed. Download the software, run the program, and the follow the on screen instructions through the Safe Connect program.
How Do I Update Windows?
You can update windows by first logging into Safe Connect and then navigating to (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com). You will still be able to update windows during the restricted access period, even if Safe Connect does not give you full access to the internet.
How Do I Update Anti-Virus and Anti Spyware?
Updating your anti-virus and anti spyware depends on the program that you using. Most programs update automatically, however, you can usually manually update by right clicking on the icon on the task bar in the bottom right corner of windows and clicking update.
