BEAVER FALLS, Pa.— Four Geneva psychology students participated in the Psi Chi poster session at the Eastern Psychological Association′s regional conference in Baltimore, Md. and won top prize. Geneva′s poster was one of 62 entries and was among 15 other top prize winners.
Lindsay Kraynak, graduating senior from Dunbar, Pa.; Karen Aiken, graduating senior from New Brighton, Pa.; Megan Gallagher, graduating senior from Moon Twp., Pa.; and Jacob Fast, junior from Salem, Ohio researched and developed the poster titled, “Looking at faces - - Developing a scaled face database.” Dr. Diana Rice, psychology professor, advised the students on the project.
The benefit of the research was to create a diverse, scaled database of faces to be used in future research. The ultimate goal of this type of research is to understand how people perceive diverse faces with various emotional expressions and how that perception affects the way a people interact with others.
The research involved scaling 100 faces of student pictures on 6 dimensions: intelligent, happy, foreign, memorable, criminal and attractive. Three psychological scales were also completed by participants, which included the Body Esteem Scale, Bogardus Social Distance Scale, and the Internal External Motivation to Suppress Prejudice Scale.
Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology, founded in 1929 for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology.
