BEAVER FALLS, Pa.- Geneva College business and accounting students ranked in the top 5% of the ETS (Educational Testing Service Major Field Tests) this spring. The test results for the undergraduate business program show that Geneva attained a 95th percentile standing overall, as well as in the fields of: accounting, economics, management, quantitative analysis, marketing, and legal/social. The 95th percentile is the highest ranking a school can attain.
The results are based on comparison with over 500 other colleges and universities. Some of those include: Arizona State University, Cedarville, Georgia State, Indiana University, Kent State, Seattle Pacific, Slippery Rock, Texas A&M, the U.S. Air Force Academy, Walsh, Washington State, and Wheaton College. None of these schools ranked higher than Geneva.
In spring, graduating seniors majoring in business and accounting took the ETS-Major Field Test in Business. The two-hour multiple-choice tests are designed to measure the basic knowledge and understanding achieved by students in their major field of study. The results provide the college with valuable information: assessing student achievement, developing/improving curricula, and benchmark comparison with other colleges.
The 95th percentile ranking is a slight improvement compared to the 2004 results showing a percentile placement between 90th and 94th. These high rankings are astounding achievements considering the predicted ranking based on incoming freshman′s SAT percentile scores.
Dr. Randall Nutter, Chair of the Business, Accounting, and Management Department, credits the design of the curriculum, outstanding professors, and the nature of the learning activities utilized by the department for the results. Students are challenged with reality-based components such as computer simulations and projects in which students actively make real decisions based on what they have learned.
The test results affirm that Geneva graduates are knowledgeable and will add value to the organizations that employ them.
