Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva′s women′s soccer team took care of all of its offense in the first 15 minutes of its match against Point Park on Thursday. The Golden Tornadoes took an early 2-0 lead against the Pioneers and held on for a 2-1 victory in the AMC North opener for both teams. Geneva moved its record to 2-2 on the season, while Point Park was playing its first match of the season.
Jenna Witkowski notched her third goal of the season just eight minutes into the match on a pass from Deanna Pierce. Seven minutes later, Kesley Anderson scored her second goal of the young season, which turned out to be the eventual game-winning goal.
Neither team found the net until the 88th minutes when Point Park′s Erica Mikolay cut Geneva′s lead in half. For Point Park, it was too little, too late and the Golden Tornadoes got their first home victory of the season and opened their conference schedule with a victory.
Geneva out shot Point Park 15-6 in the game and sophomore goalkeeper Amber Weaver turned away five shots to pick up her second victory of the season. Weaver was just two minutes away from her first shut-out of the new season.
The Golden Tornadoes will travel to Bethany College on Friday to close out the week. Next week, Geneva returns home on Tuesday to battle St. Vincent College.
