Beaver Falls, PA – It was anything but a perfect night for soccer as Geneva′s women hosted a very good Seton Hill team in a steady rainfall on Tuesday night. A goal by Seton Hill in the 41st minute held up and despite an incredible performance from Geneva goalkeeper Amber Weaver, the Golden Tornadoes fell to Seton Hill 1-0. Geneva′s record fell back to .500 at 4-4, while Seton Hill improved to 5-1.
Seton Hill, coming off a 16-2-2 season in 2005, got all the offense it needed when junior forward Nicole Pergar fired a shot from just outside the penalty area late in the first half. Pergar, who led Seton Hill with 18 goals last year, found the lose ball and made no mistake. Pergar′s shot was the only thing that sophomore goalkeeper Amber Weaver didn′t stop all night.
Geneva′s goalkeeper made 19 saves, several of which were above average to keep Geneva breathing in the match. Weaver′s efforts were almost rewarded in the 59th minute, when senior Lisa Drentkiewicz fired a direct kick from 25 yards out that hit the cross bar and then deflected off the Seton Hill goalkeeper and just wide of the net. Drentkiewicz′s effort was Geneva′s best scoring opportunity and the Golden Tornadoes could only generate six shots on the night, but none was more dangerous than that shot with just over 30 minutes left to play.
Seton Hill fired 20 shots at Weaver on the night, but could never pull away from the Golden Tornadoes. Both Seton Hill and Geneva are playing in their final seasons in the American Mideast Conference. Geneva will leave for the PAC and Division III, while Seton Hill will join the WVIAC and NCAA Division II next season.
Geneva will get back into AMC North action on Saturday when it travels to Roberts Wesleyan. The Golden Tornadoes are currently in first place in the AMC North with a 2-0 record.
