Bittersweet Finale as Geneva′s Seniors Say Good-Bye with a Victory
Beaver Falls, PA - It has been quite some time since four graduating seniors have played such an important role for the Geneva women′s volleyball team. On Thursday night, the foursome played their final regular season home match against Carlow University and came away with a very important 3-0 victory. The win moved Geneva′s overall record to 15-18, including an 11-3 mark in the AMC North. The Golden Tornadoes will now play the waiting game for the next 48 hours to see if that record will be good enough for their first ever AMC North divisional crown. Currently in second place, Geneva will need some help from either Notre Dame College or Roberts Wesleyan over the weekend to secure the top spot.
For Geneva′s senior foursome of Marisa Barickman, Allison Seldomridge, Caryn Azure and Megan Summers, Thursday served as the final chapter in a very productive volleyball career. Clearly the team leaders on and off the court in 2006, the four seniors sadly said good-bye to their teammates and fans on the final regular season night of the year.
The good news, however, is that there is still plenty of work to be down in 2006 and the seniors still have a lot of work to do. In fact, if Geneva were to get the needed help to secure first place in the AMC North, the Golden Tornadoes would host the AMC tournament next weekend. Without that help, Geneva would go on the road to either Notre Dame or Roberts Wesleyan.
On Thursday night, Geneva cruised to its third consecutive victory with a three-game sweep over Carlow University, which ended its 2006 campaign with a 9-22 overall record. Much like the rest of the season, Geneva′s four seniors led all of the major statistical categories in the victory. One night after throwing down 14 kills with no errors, Megan Summers had another strong performance in the middle with 11 kills, six blocks and three service aces. Marisa Barickman led the offense with 17 kills. Seniors Caryn Azure and Allison Seldomridge had their normal workmanlike efforts with 37 assists and 16 digs respectively.
For Geneva, it will enjoy a tremendous comeback in 2006 to end the season. After starting the season with a record of 8-16, the Golden Tornadoes finished the year out having won seven of their last nine matches. Geneva will open AMC tournament play a week from Friday at a site to be determined in the next few days.
