Cleveland, OH – It was back to basics for Geneva′s men′s basketball team after suffering through a pair of losses to end 2006. On Friday night, the Golden Tornadoes turned up the defense in the second half of an impressive 70-47 victory over Myers University. The victory improved Geneva′s record to 8-7 and more importantly gave the Golden Tornadoes the confidence they need heading into the AMC North schedule.

Geneva took just a seven-point lead into the locker room, but it turned the game around and extended the lead thanks to a solid defensive effort coming out to start the second half. “We talked about turning up the defensive intensity in the second half,” said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. Geneva allowed just three points in the first 11 minutes of the second half while extending its lead to 21 points. Eventually, the Golden Tornadoes were able to put the game away by out scoring Myers by 16 points in the final 20 minutes.

“We really needed a victory,” said Santarsiero. “We have our toughest stretch of games coming up in the next two weeks and we needed this game to jump start our confidence. It was a solid effort all-around, but I was very pleased with our guys on the defensive end of the floor.”

Geneva was led by Greg McDivitt′s 14 points, while Jermaine Ferguson and Kyle McDermott each chipped in with 12 in the victory. Solid from the floor all night, Geneva shot 59% from the floor from the field, including a sizzling 68% in the final 20 minutes.

Geneva will await 4th ranked and undefeated Point Park to come calling to Metheny Fieldhouse next Thursday for the AMC North opener.
