Amherst, NY – After a spirited effort on Saturday night in a two-point loss at Seton Hill University, Geneva head men′s basketball coach Jeff Santarsiero was expecting an equally strong effort in an AMC North match-up against Daemen College on Tuesday. It was anything but spirited as a lethargic Geneva team dropped an 81-65 decision to remain winless in the conference. Losing its third straight overall, Geneva fell to 8-10 overall, including an 0-2 mark within the AMC North.
Geneva opened the game by scoring the first bucket, but the lead was short-lived and the Golden Tornadoes would be trying to swim upstream for the rest of the night. The first half belonged to Daemen′s Dewan Stroud. Coming in as Daemen′s leading scorer with an average just over 16 points per game, Stroud caught fire for 22 first-half points, including 4-4 from three-point range. Despite Stroud′s heroics, Daemen led by just nine points at the half.
A Bryan Hill three-point field goal pulled Geneva to within six points early in the second half, but Geneva could draw no closer. Hill ended the game with four three-point field goals and a team high 13 points. Jermaine Ferguson added 10 points in the loss. For Daemen, Stroud ended his career night with 30 points to lead all scorers.
“We really felt good coming into this game,” Santarsiero said. “Daemen was without some key people and we felt we were getting them at the right time. We just didn′t give a very good performance and we got exactly what we deserved.”
Geneva will have to quickly regroup to get back into the AMC North with back to back conference games scheduled for this weekend. The Golden Tornadoes will host Houghton on Friday night and welcome Roberts Wesleyan to Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
